Are you logging in with a Live ID or local account? Are you entering a password?
With the 8.1.1 update. You will actually get an error that you are not connected to the network. When you try and login with the Live ID.
As a test I unplugged my LAN cable on my desktop PC and booted up. I logged in fine and got no errors. Other than the network connection icon in the Notifications area all was normal. I didn't try to launch any metro Apps though, the ones I use wouldn't have worked. Then I just plugged my LAN cable back in and made the above post.

As far as logging in goes, I haven't noticed any difference. Network connection of not I can still log in and use the PC. I also just miss typed my password on purpose and all I got was a "this password is not correct" message. I just typed in the correct one and logged in fine. Didn't have to reboot. I have yet to see a "locked" message?

Out of curiosity I put the laptop to sleep and woke it and typed in a completely wrong password and it did the same thing. If the password is wrong shouldn't it just say so?

Come to think about it, I may have entered the wrong password and locked the login??????

I have a Windows 7 desktop and a new Windows 8.1 desktop which I have been using for the last few months. All 3 passwords are a variation on one password so I may have forgotten the variation (for the laptop) so may not remember what the password WAS for the laptop.

Another thing that made me not remember(?) the laptop password is that it has a fingerprint reader I used to use for logging in. When I updated to Windows 8 the fingerprint reader was NOT supported which added to my not remembering the password

How do I login in now?

If I can't with or without the password? Can I just install Windows 8.1 over it (the laptop)? I bought 2 Windows 8 packs

I suspect the word "Locked" speaks volumes about my problem
There is a Lock screen and a Login screen. They are two different screens. If you don't log out and let the PC go into sleep mode or hibernation you can get the Lock screen. Just leaving the PC idle for an extended period can bring up the Lock screen. It depends on what you Power settings are in Control Panel. To get the login screen you need to log off or completely power down and do a cold boot.

This is 100% true. You absolutely definitely do not need any network access to sign on - live ID or not.

EDIT: BTW I, like the OP, forgot my live ID password recently as I always use fingerprint reader. They are a bit annoying like that. At least if you type it in every day you remember it (as does your key-logger root kit)

First, I want to thank everyone who tried to help

I left any action to Saturday knowing I would have 2 days without babysitting duties to face my problem

I started by restarting and applying updates though I didn't think there were any?

After a long time I got the Lock screen. Pressed "Enter"and got the login screen, this time without the "Locked" message

Entered a few suspected passwords and got the password incorrect messages (yeah!)

With each incorrect password attempt I got the suggestion to go to account.live.com/password/reset to reset my password.

Went to my new 8.1 desktop and went through the process of resetting my password for the laptop. Lots of verification and I got a code sent to my phone to verify etc. My password for the laptop was reset to be the same as the password for my desktop.

Went back to the laptop and entered the new password....

    Ta Da! I am in....

I am glad I didn't have to enable Administration accounts and Safe mode etc as THAT did frighten me.

Even though I have been a programmer for 40 years I have always been terrified of safe modes and BIOSs and UEFI BIOSs etc. Just terrified I might set or unset some option and totally disable the system. Strange, I know but that's my nightmare

Thanks again. Also strange that no one suggested the password reset option

NOW I have to read up on how to get 8.1 on my laptop

The primary account has to be a LiveID account with 8.1.1 now. Any Secondary account can be a normal login. MS is forcing it that you have to connect to the network, if you are using the primary account.
