As far as I know they haven't killed support for 8.0 yet. Indications are they are going to give you two years from date of release. Similar to what they normally do when a Service Pack is released. It's confusing though because on one hand Microsoft states the upgrade to 8.1 is not a service pack, but on the other hand they want to treat it like one. In any case it appears they want everybody running 8.0 to move on to 8.1. That's my understanding anyway. It wouldn't surprise me if they changed their mind again and I missed it though.

Some users, like me, had issues after doing the Store upgrade to 8.1. I had no such issues though after doing a clean install of 8.1 on the same PC. The issue for a lot of people though is finding the 8.1 install media to do the clean install. Other than TechNet or MSDN there is only one other reliable source listed on this forum. Unfortunately though, if you have an OEM install your OEM key won't let you use that download. It also appears that Microsoft blocked the trick for getting 8.1 with your 8.0 key. Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create If you can get hold of some 8.1 install media you can do this. Activate retail Windows 8.1 with Windows 8 Product key.

There is no need for a registry hack, just type netplwiz or control userpasswords2 and tick a check box.
Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup
OK, thank you Kerry. I missed that

No problem, there are usually many different ways to do things. Some, like me, prefer to do it natively in Windows if I can. Don't get me wrong though, there is nothing wrong with doing it that way. I've just been doing it the other way since forever. I auto logon my desktop PC. My laptop though I leave it so it prompts for a password.

Same here but I forgot all about it since I always install Windows without a password (Local Account) and auto logon is turned on automatically. Very seldom I have use for MS Account.

I password protect my shared folders on my home network so I've always used a password to log in with. Being a Microsoft MVP, my Live ID is used for more than just my Windows login so its advantageous for me to use one. I also use Metro Apps so it's needed for that to.
