Waking laptop from sleep with lid closed

As for the Bios, I have one of those new, dumbed-down bios version with close to nothing to set and choose.
Wake on LAN is ether disabled or (in my case) enabled, no other wake-anything whatsoever.
The laptop being brand new (1 week old), I am not sure I would risk physical damage to it, warranty wise

Most laptops are like that, just the basic options. Yeah, being new I wouldn't want to modify it either. Wish I had another idea but I don't.

Look for a little protrusion sticking out usually down along the bottom near the hinges. If you see one you'll likely see a little hole on the laptop top cover. The protrusion goes in the hole when you close the lid and trips a switch. Opening the lid flicks the switch open again. If you carefully file the plastic protrusion down so the bezel is flat the switch will never get switched and the laptop will think the lid is always open. I would consider this a last resort type of deal though.
Unless I need a microscope to see it, I can't seem to see anything that stick out and press a recessed switch; maybe it's hidden within the hinges

Judging from your reponses so far, this is not a "win8 cough-feature" then?
Am I to understand other people would normally be able to wake a closed-lid laptop with external mice/ k/b?

It could be very hard to see or even hidden like you say.

I might have edited my last post while you were replying; can you share your thoughts on the above

I don't use sleep or hibernate on any of my PC's including my laptop. I disable hibernate from the command line to kill the hiperfile.sys file. I have an SSD in my laptop so it boots up in 10 seconds from a cold start anyway. In the past when I actually tried to use sleep mode I didn't find it very reliable. The PC either wouldn't go to sleep or wouldn't wake up again when it did. I'd have re enable hibernate and change a bunch of my power options to test if it will wake up with the lid closed. I'd have to connect an external monitor too. I'm going to wait a little while and see if anybody else replies before I try it.

I'd be inclined to remove (not just disable) BitDefender to test the machine thoroughly.

I'm looking at this page: Acer | Download

Yours might be slightly different because of different county or something. Install all the latest drivers shown for 8.1.

In addition, install all the drivers under 8 that you did not install from 8.1 section.

Leave out the INF chipset Intel. Install that from here instead: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...ng&keyword=inf

Finally, double check that you are on the right page for your exact machine, then install latest bios from it. Acer makes lots of updates in bios that fix broken things often, even undocumented.

Set your power plan to not ask for a password upon waking up, plugged in and not plugged in too.

In the power plan settings is also the option for "sleep button settings" - perhaps pay attention to that as well, since the internal switch that is toggled when the screen opens and closes can be wired as that - just an idea.

If the machine is sleeping and you can't wake it up - do Windows key + L

Under software tab I did find something for 8 that wasn't offered for 8.1, it's called "ePower Management Application"
Sounds promising, I'm crossing my fingers and will update you shortly

ePower Management Application certainly looked promising, putting a quick start shortcut on the taskbar that opened to new power management choices I had no access to before. So far no joy yet in waking from sleep with lid closed, but I am hard-headed and I'll continue to peck at this thing until it does what I want. I may still have a few pre 8.1 drivers and stuff to gather and will do some extra research on those power options. Bios was already the latest, but oddly only the 2nd they've released (206).

I might even become Acer tech support rep worst nightmare if I'm still unable to have this thing behave a little better. It being friday evening, the call of the cold icy one(s) is upon me, so thanks already for real good pointers.

hahah Bitdefender - try what I said, since you seem highly enthusiastic to remedy this. It is worth a shot at least.
