Computer freezing randomly - requires reboot

My name is Jane and I am on a Windows 8 X 64 system and all has been great for a while. About 3 days ago I started having the computer freeze up suddenly. At first it would recover after a short time but finally it totally crashed the system, requiring a reboot to get going again. It seems to happen a lot when i right click on something, but has also happened when the system was not active once, today. I was reading some web instructions and suddenly my screen went black and I got a message saying there was no video signal. The progress I have seen with this was at first just freezing for a few seconds, then for a longer time. Then it stopped recovering at all and the screen would black out and I would get the no signal message. Now my user account is totally trashed. If I try to log in to it I get a black screen, the no signal message and have to reboot to get my video back. I am using the Admin account to send this and it seems to be ok, but I did have one crash from this account earlier too.

At first I thought it was something in Chrome so I uninstalled it and reinstalled because the crashes seem to always come when I was using Chrome. I do not think that fixed it, though because it has crashed since then. I looked around in safe mode, but I really have no idea of what I am looking for. Any thoughts, suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated.

This might or might not help but is worth trying.
In administrator command prompt run sfc /scannow.

    Then run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

in administrator command prompt & reboot & run sfc again.

    Post back with results.

Both commands take a while to finish.
    Up to an hour.

Thanks so much for the response. Hopefully I can keep the system running long enough to complete this. I will post again tomorrow. Shutting down and going to bed before I throw the whole computer out of the window. (laughing)

    Glad you got it fixed.

Robert Heinlein got the title from a son of Moses, Gershom.

Moses flees ancient Egypt, where he has lived all his life, and later marries Zipporah: Exodus 2:22: "And she [Zippo'rah] bare him a son, and he called his nameGershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land".

I had read that in the book he did about his life. Can not remember the mane of it now. DRAT! Anyway, is this scan something that one might want to do occasionally, just to keep things tidy?

Is it also good to do in 7? We have 2 machines running on 7. Thanks so much for taking your time with this, by the way. I will quit bugging you after this question, promise.
