I entered 'win' in windows 8 search. I get 25 'win' results in Apps, 67 in Settings and 72 in Files. I clicked on Settings choice and Windows Update was first one on the list. :-/.

Exactly! You have to click on Settings to see Windows Update. From a Desktop Start Menu like Start8, it's show about half way down the results page. Simpler, easier to get to.

I just type "upd" and it shows up faster with less unwanted results.

Hopefully Windows Blue improves the search better, so you don't have to click on the tabs when nothing shows up in the default view.

I find that too. "Windows", of course, would be a very common word in the system as so to yield more unwanted results.

Well, basically, in order to "prove me wrong" -- you would have to be standing here while I do a search and deny what I am clearly seeing on the screen -- which, of course, you can not do. Even if it works for you, which it apparently does, that still does not help me. So, it's still not proving me "wrong".

The to-each-his-own only works to a certain point. This is a tech website. Making a general tech statement, especially one with technical nature in it, requires more description than just a typical "it sux" proclamation.
I did NOT say that win8 "sux"; instead, I said that Search does not work -- for me. Claiming that something fails on MY PC is an entirely different thing than claiming it fails in general -- and I have NEVER said that Search fails in general. It doesn't work on my PC; in fact, from the day I installed Win8, it never worked on my PC -- which was the main reason I searched around for alternative ways of finding stuff.

Furthermore, if you can provide some Search examples that always work for you, I will be happy to try them myself.
Search on Windows 8 for me works perfectly fine, odd how it doesn't for you.

Try searching for Default Programs, with just "default," that should yield a result under Apps.

"Internet Explorer" should yield a result in Apps as well.

"Windows Update" should show six Settings, under settings.

Windows 8 is so great, I never actually have a need to go to Windows Update anymore.

Search works flawless here, perhaps Mark's windows installation has its search index corrupt, or the service is disabled?

Let me just comment on your image that says "Windows 8:Think outside the box". I really really really really really really wish they would have thought in the box....
