Can't shut down & other problems

When attempting a shut down, the process "Windows Logon Application" uses 100% of one CPU core, and the computer does not shut down. When I try to end the task, it asks if I want to abandon unsaved data and shut down. This is happening every time I go into Windows now. I used the reset button last time, and again it wouldn't shut down. I had to hold in the power button for 10 seconds to turn it off, but I can't keep doing that. Already had a look at power options.

Hello Aeed, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Are you closing and saving any windows that you have open before shutting down the PC? If not, then that could cause your PC to hang at shut down while it waits on the window(s) to be forced closed.

If so, then turn off Fast Startup as a test to see if that may be the issue.
    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Yes, I'm closing all windows. Not that it should matter, since Windows 7 allows you to shut down even if windows are open. I tried turning off fast startup then shutting down. It goes to a blue screen with the text "Shutting down" and stays there indefinitely. I ended up hitting the reset button. Turned fast startup back on now.

Sure, Windows 8 will still shut down even if you left something open. It's just that if you do, then it may cause it to hang at shut down if the program ignores the request to close to be able to finish shutting down.

If you have a restore point available dated before this started, then you could do a quick system restore using that restore point to hopefully fix this for you.

Just tried two system restore points. The problem persists across both. I've returned to the latest state.

In that case, troubleshoot using a clean boot to see if you may have a program or driver that may be responsible.

I really don't want to install Windows 8 again. I think I'm leaning towards doing a refresh, so that I can at least keep my personal files.

Clean Boot is not a clean install or to install Windows 8 at all. Instead, it's for troubleshooting.

Please click on tutorial link in my post above for more details.

Ok tried the clean boot method. No luck. Any other steps you'd recommend to try & solve this? Quick unrelated question: I have an SSD, can I disable superfetch in msconfig, or should I disabled it some other way? (I've already set EnablePrefetcher and EnableSuperfetch in the registry to 0.)

    Try doing it.
After turning off the computer, try turn it on again, check on the Event Log to the time of shutdown.
