Can't shut down or restart

PC settings / Devices turn off something to save bytes there
Store / Charms / Settings / App updates turn that off

Download over metered connections
To help prevent extra charges, keep this off so device software (drivers, info, and apps) for new devices won't download while you're on metered Internet connections

It's already off. How do I tell it my connection is metered?

Store / Charms / Settings / App updates turn that off
I can find PC settings, but I can't find this.

It wants me to sign into Windows store to go in there. I'll pass.

'nother question: I want to backup stuff from my XP drive, but it won't let me access my personal data (probably because there's a password). Can I boot into safe mode, remove the password, and will it then allow me to copy the data using Windows 8?

Aeed,

If you like, you can use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to turn off automatic Store app updates instead without having to sign in to the Store to do so.

Please go ahead and create a new thread for any questions that are not related to this thread to get better help with them. This way this thread can stay on topic as well :)

Thanks for the link. The third option worked.

Umm, if possible I would like to keep everything in one thread. I really dislike opening multiple threads when troubleshooting. I changed the thread title about 6 hours ago so everything will still be on topic.

Just tried safe mode in XP and booting from XP CD (to repair). BSOD for both. I think I'm going to use a Linux live CD to take ownership of my XP files and transfer them to one of the Windows 8 drives.
