    Now the trouble starts

I just wasted $40 for a Windows 8 license and installed it with VMware. And the first two simple things I tried don't work.

    1. When I wanted to use one of my own pictures as desktop background, it tells me that I do not have an application for that. Since when do we need applications to set a desktop background. It works neither from the picture directly nor thru Personalize.

    2. I always automate my logins with Netplwiz. That is a hit and miss too. It works a couple of times, then I have to loging manually again (although the little box is still unchecked).

What a mess. All these functions worked in the prerelease versions. I knew I was wasting my money.

    1. Works fine for me, both through a picture and through Personalize.

    2. I have auto login working fine. Just make sure you clear the password too, by CTRL-ALT-DEL -> Change password -> Enter current password then leaving new password field blank.

I also don't have it running in a virtual environment.

You did an upgrade install, didn't you? Even though you know how many problems people have with upgrades...

Wow what a waste, a full operating system for less than half the price of most good games

There was a guy on here a few days ago who said he found it exciting and challenging to find new ways of doing things, I feel exactly the same way, bit like an explorer or learning DOS the first time, but obviously you don't.

Young man, I have been around computers since 1958 and learned about 50 different operating systems - that was my job. A new OS does not scare me. I can tell a good OS from a marginal one and for right now Windows 8 is marginal in my book - at least for the desktop user.

I can only imagine how you reacted then when Start Menu was introduced in Windows 95.

Problem 1 is solved after I downloaded the Windows Live apps.

Problem 2 is still mysterious. No idea why it would undo my Netplwiz settings at times. Will keep an eye on that.

Odd, out of the several installs of Windows 8 I've done, never heard of that issue, in fact, I've never heard of that issue with the wallpaper in general. The closest was with vista and randomly deciding that it doesn't want anyone to change the wallpaper anymore by simply cutting that option out.

As for the auto-login, I've never heard of this happening either. I've done it with Windows 7 and now on 8, works flawlessly.

Can you describe a bit more in detail about the issues? For the first, what are you doing where that was prompted? And for the auto-login, is this after a restart it doesn't work or after starting up from a hybrid shut down?

And how did you react to Windows 95 out of curiosity?

i wasn't being disrespectful that's why I put the crying face on there. Look I'm far from being an expert but I've been using computers since 1985 and also started with DOS. I know Windows 8 might be a little quirky at first but believe me it's far from being marginal, it's just a slightly different way of working.

In my opinion it's faster, it boots up faster, it's easier to get around and it looks clean and modern.

My wife is absolutely hopeless on computers, I usually have to show her everything about 100 times before she grasps it. I installed Windows 8 and Quiken and some games for her a couple of days ago and the only thing I showed her was to get to the desktop and back to Metro.

I left her and she was playing a game, an hour later I asked her how she was going and she said she'd updated Quiken done some banking and she remarked how easy Windows 8 was, I nearly fainted, she'd even managed to open the charms bar.

if she says Windows 8 is easy, it's easy.

She loves some of the new games in the store as well, Microsoft Mahjong and Taptile and the piano app.

    Bill Windows -
Wow what a waste, a full operating system for less than half the price of most good games

It's funny you should make that comparison, Bill, because that's exactly how I've always treated a new OS.
It started when I first transitioned from the C64/Amiga I'd previously been running, to the IBM/MS/Intel world in 1994.
I'd literally never used a PC before, apart from two short 'introduction' courses, and really did have NFI, so I started playing
around, aided by a few 'beginner' books and a subscription to PC Format.
I basically treated Win 3.1/3.11 and Windows 95 as 'adventure games' and that's how I learned to use a PC. I broke the OS
many times, but learned a hell of a lot about it in the process.
To this day I love to get 'under the hood' and see what's really going on in there. It made Windows 8 far less of a challenge to
learn than it might otherwise have been.
    Wenda.
