    You're a STAR!

I have Easeus Todo Home Backup 5.0 installed and out of curiosity of this thread I tried to get into safe mode myself and I got the exact same problem you did.
The quick blue screen with an unhappy face saying there's a problem.

So I un-installed Todo backup it and now I can get into safe mode!

You're good for figuring that out, I would have never guessed.

I noticed that the program loaded a couple of services on Windows startup. It was the only program (apart from my Anti-Virus), that did that. So it was going to be a process of elimination, fortunately Easeus Backup was the first I tried. It must load something into the boot process to do that!

It is weird that this has not been noticed before. I started a question with Microsoft support, and it seems they have no idea this was happening. In fact since I gave them the solution they have not replied!

    UPDATE:

I contacted Easeus and they were aware of the problem and had in fact already fixed it in their latest release; in my case Home Backup v5.5 which I confirm has fixed the issue of breaking safe mode.

So to those of you using Easeus backup products on Windows 8, make sure you update to v5.5 because v5.0 will prevent safe mode while it is installed.

Good on Easeus support for keeping on top of things, my only quibble is that they knew of the problem but it is not in their FAQ's. But I'm not fussed.

Why was their backup software interfering with the boot process, and does it still access the boot process?
