There is a 24GB mSATA SSD that is listed in the manual , but it could only act as cache memory right?
Just installed a samsung 250 msata in my Lenovo, which also had a 'cache' listed in some options for the model. msata accepted as a new 'normal' drive. Imaged the OS from the original 500 hd. Of course, some work involved with macrium\partition wizard + dismantling the laptop to reach the msata slot, but zero problems and all well, kept the old 500 hd in there for files.

So may be worth investigating this for your HP (if 500MB + 1TB sounds tempting, or a cheaper 120 or 250 msata may be enough if keeping the 1TB in there).

Booting OS from mSATA cache SSD is really a tedious process, have to go through many coding & BIOS modifications in my HP laptop.

I think the max my lap is going to take is 24gigs mSATA and so OS would not be able to get in there.

I'm planning to replace main HDD with SSD & keep the HDD safe in my desk.

Dismantling my laptop to get the mSATA into the board would not be covered under warranty it seems as far as what I got the response from the service center.

msata was no hassle in the Lenovo S310, but if in doubt for your particular laptop just swapping the hd for a ssd is the safe and easy route. Good luck.

Ahhh..., indeed no easy access to hd on this model > http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04016432.pdf
You may need to get the job done at an accredited HP service center to preserve any warranty.

Service center guys are telling they won't handle upgrade to third party SSDs,
I'm not understanding what's that meant by

Then I asked them whether they would provide an SSD for replacement, that's a No from them

Then I asked if I could replace it myself, then... you know what they would be telling!

I have to go on egging then till I get my SSD upgrade done, I'm not understanding why these service center are kept then for?

    Hi there

    Thanks topgundcp, 4wd :

Ordered Samsung SSD , will be arriving next week,

I wanted to clear some of my doubts here -

Macrium & Disk Management screenshots -

could you guys tell me which all partitions are to be selected from Macrium while cloning?

In disk management I see two OEM (D:\) Recovery partitions approx. 20GB each listed in the upper panel & not in the lower one
& then C:\ drive partition, Recovery partition , EFI system partition

In Macrium, I can see C:\ drive partition, D:\(OEM Recovery partition I suppose), then 400MB , 260MB & an extra unformatted primary of size 128MB- I don't know what's that meant by!

    Just few questions:

Which is correct listing - Disk management or Macrium?,
Why there are 2 OEM recovery partitions in disk management?
what is the extra unformatted partition?

Actually what all should I be selecting for clone through Macrium? (I'll be also doing a back up of them if you advise so that if cloning don't succeed I can go for restoring the partitions )

Before starting the cloning, is there any settings to be changed in Macrium? (heard about alignment to 1MB etc)

After cloning & installation any settings to be changed in the system - I don't know how to change them , please provide some tutorials for that too,

    Thanks in advance

I swapped a 750 GB spinner drive in my ASUS laptop for a 128 GB SSD. Both were 9 mm (thickness) drives so it was an easy swap. I actually put a 128 GB SSD and a 256 GB SSD in as it has dual drive bays. I didn't have much luck trying to clone one drive to the other. In the end I did a clean install. I just recently did a drive swap on my wife's Acer laptop. It had a 7 mm drive so that's what I ordered for an SSD. The last 3 drives I ordered were 7 mm drives and they came with the spacer to let them fit in a 9 mm drive bay. The picture you posted shows the spacer. I put one 256 GB SSD in her laptop to replace the 500 GB spinner drive. Clean install on that one too. Length and width wise SSD drives are an exact match to laptop drives, they are both the same form factor. 2.5 inch. Putting an SSD in a desktop PC will often require a bay adapter as standard desktop drives are bigger.

EDIT: I put both of the removed drives in external enclosures and use them for external storage and backup.
