Add "Computer" to Win 8 file explorer navigation pane

Add "Computer" to Win 8 file explorer navigation pane

Back in Win 7, "Computer" disappeared from my explorer navigation pane. Did several repair/installs, but all of them failed. Also tried the registry fix described in SevenForums, which also failed.

After upgrading to Windows 8, "Computer" is still missing from the navigation pane. Tried the registry fix described in EightForums (Computer - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane in Windows 8 Explorer), which failed in several attempts.

I realize a clean install of Win 8 is probably required to fix this, but what I'd really like to know is what has been lost in the system that prevents restoration of "Computer" in the navigation pane.

I'd be grateful for any assistance in this.

    Steve

Is this the upgrade over top of 7? Is this a home network setup with more than one computer? Have all the computers joined the homegroup?

Hello Steve, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Could you post a screenshot of your File Explorer showing all of the navigation pane?

As a test, check to see if the Show all folders option is unchecked (turned off) in the navigation pane to see if that may be the issue.

Thanks to all who've responded. Show all folders is checked. I think the problem has to do with something that happened in Win 7 that continued after I upgraded to Win 8. I can work around this, but it's annoying, and I'm not quite ready to do a clean install of 8. Just wondering why Computer - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane in Windows 8 Explorer doesn't work for me.

    Thanks again,
    Steve

    Steve,

Well, to find out why the tutorial didn't work for you, please try this below.

Does Computer show then you uncheck the Show all folders option?

Could you post a screenshot of your File Explorer showing all of the navigation pane to see if it may reveal a cause?

Unchecking Show all folders makes no difference.

As an easy fix, you can install classic shell - you have the option to only install the explorer bit - but you may as well install the start menu also.

You can then add computer as a link to your explorer windows. It is very handy.

    Steve,

You might see if downloading and merging the REG file below, then restarting the computer may help. It will restore the default registry entries for "Computer".

If that still doesn't help, then refreshing Windows 8 should.
