Solved Win8 x64 PC reboots when waking from sleep

Hi Guys, after a hardware upgrade (HDDs replaced with SSDs) my PC now reboots when waking from sleep. O/S is Win 8 x64 (new clean install) & sleep worked fine before the upgrade. I suspect it's either a driver issue or compatibility between sata controller & SSD but I need some assistance to narrow this down.

I'd really appreciate if someone could check the attached SF Diagnostic logs and advise what the cause is?
Many thanks ..........

First off, there's a whole pile of hard drives here. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply Unit?

Please ensure that your SSD's are updated to the latest firmware.

Quite a few IaStor errors (Intel storage drivers) in the WER section of MSINFO32. Please download and install a fresh set of the drivers from Intel Download Center (there may not be newer one's as yours date from Nov 2012). If no newer one's are available, let's hold off on doing anything with them right now.

Also, it's noted that some of your hard drives are connected to the Marvell storage controller. Please be sure that none of the SSD's are connected to it - as it's older drivers are known to cause problems.

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:
There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website)
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
- Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard!
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.
- Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
It's my opinion that SSD's aren't reliable enough (with current hardware) to be used on a system that needs to work reliably. Until I see reliability I will not recommend, nor will I use, SSD's for critical applications.
06 Dec 2011 - This post tends to confirm issues with certain SSD chipsets and certain controllers - [SOLVED] cant find the cause of BSOD F4 - Tech Support Forum
29 May 2012 - The frequency of BSOD's with SSD's seems to have been decreasing over the last several months. It may be approaching time to re-evaluate my stand on their suitability for use in production systems.
10 Nov 2012 - I'm seeing an upswing in SSD errors - but most appear due to older storage controller drivers. I strongly suggest NOT using storage controller drivers that don't date from 2012 (if none are available, don't connect an SSD to that controller)

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Hi Usasma, many thanks for the help - your pointers have enabled me to fix the problem! FYI, here are the answers to your questions:

(1) PSU is 2 year old Corsair HX1000W so plenty of power
(2) SSD's all using latest firmware from maufacturers' sites
(3) Drivers all using latest versions from OEM sites
(4) Original disk configuration (mobo GA-Z77X-UD5H):
Intel Z77 Sata III = 2 x Samsung 840 Pro 256GB in raid 0
Intel Z77 Sata II = 2 x Samsung 830 128GB in raid 0
Intel Z77 Sata II = 2 x Crucial C300 128GB in raid 0
Marvell 9172 Sata III = 2 x WD Caviar Black 1TB in raid 1
Marvell 9172 Sata III = 1 x WD Caviar Black 1TB in ahci
Generic PCIe Sata III card (Marvell 9128) = 1 x DVD-R, 1 x BD-R

After trying many different combinations of the disks and re-installs of Win8 it looks like there's a problem with the Marvell Sata III drivers (v.1.2.0.1032) when using both controllers - 9172 on the mobo & 9128 on the expansion card. If I loaded the Marvell raid driver during Windows install then the optical drives would not initialize correctly & showed as a 'power failure' in device manager. Installing Windows without the pre-install driver allowed the optical drives to initialize but the WD raid 1 partitions were then missing in disk manager until the raid driver was loaded (not a big deal but messes with the drive letters). In all cases, resuming from sleep would cause the PC to reboot & crashdump!

(I tried moving the optical disks to the Intel Sata II controller but the performance of the SSD raid arrays on the Marvel Sata III ports was worse than using the Intel Sata II ports!!!).

The only solution to the sleep problem was to remove the expansion card, remove the DVD drive & attach the BD-R drive to the fourth 9172 port (external eSATA) via an eSATA to internal SATA cable. This has been working well for the last 24 hours and the PC now resumes from sleep without a problem!

Maybe this will help others with similar issues?
Thanks again,
staveley

Thanks for the detailed report - it will help others!
I've also added it to my canned speech about SSD's and will refer others with Marvell controller issues to this post!
Thanks again!
