Windows 8′s market share finally surpasses desktop Linux

After gaining just 0.4% of the PC market in February, Windows 8 positively exploded in March, gaining another 0.5% of the market — an astronomical growth rate of almost 20%. This means that Windows 8 now commands no less than 3.1% of the PC market — a comfortable distance ahead of desktop Linux. To celebrate, many manufacturers are cutting the price of Windows RT tablets.

Five months in: Windows 8′s market share finally surpasses desktop Linux | ExtremeTech

I like this part.

what we’ve seen so far — a better Metro control panel, more app snapping options — aren’t exactly killer features. Or, rather, maybe they are — in the sense that they’ll kill Windows.

So we're expecting Windows to be ONLY on the desktop and somewhat on the laptop that can possibly be replaced with a phablet? I find THAT, atrocious. What we need less are people that are stuck in the year 2000 thinking Windows is meant for the desktop PC and realize that in 2002, xp made it onto the tablet form factor before anyone. Times have changes and tablets are the mainstream, and it's a hassle to keep two devices: a laptop and a phablet. It's pointless to have such because it's "proper" for touch to be only on a tablet or smartphone. If that were the way, Windows will be obsolete not due to a new UI, but due to an old one. A Windows that has adapted to change and adapted to the zeitgeist of the technological times can't adapt to touch? I find that hard to believe.

But then again, certain people are hard to believe...

What is atrocious is poeple who think that desktop PCs will disapear, that the mouse will disapear, that we will all be with palm-piloted devices and no real computers anymore.
Everybody ask me "why don't you buy a laptop?!" as I stick with my old tower PC. Because my vision of computering is to use a computer, not a portable gadget in lieu of of a computer.
When I'll need to travel with a computer or a semi=advanced device, I'll buy one. But the point is, in my case, I must need it before I buy it.
So Coke, the point is that Windows™ should also work on PCs.

The mouse will die, that is something that is going to happen for sure. Maybe 2022 or somewhere around there? Basically, the touchscreen, along with the NUI makes the use of the mouse totally nil.

I still stick to a desktop tower PC. I'm still doing some designing and revising of my new tower as it is going to be a superfluously complicated beast. I will eventually have a tablet PC, most likely a Surface Pro 2 or a Nokia Pro tablet if that happens, or maybe an ASUS tablet PC. I want my devices to have one interaction input at least, along with speech, and maybe motion gesture.

Lol, how true.

Coke and his touch pc's just crack me up. No one buying them, unless the dam thing sits in your lap it is just not practical.

And if that is not enough Samsung is about to jump right over touch and release new tech with eye gestures. Now that I can see using on a PC, but touch, please that's for the grocery store checkout or kids to play with.

Hi there
@cokerobot - reading through your various threads -- it's almost impossible to really follow what you are trying to say -- you seem to change your position more than a young baby needs to have its diapers changed.

Do you really imagine that a Touch screen can be used instead of a mouse -- Well I'd like to see you edit a whole slew of documents where you need to cut and paste a whole load of text / other objects WITHOUT USING A MOUSE.

Whatever the age of the technology a mouse is still the most efficient way of managing some objects.
I have no doubt there will be all sorts of other hardware around by 2020 but until someone can provide an alternative to a mouse it's not going away any time soon.

Some penlike devices could partially take the place of a mouse but for dealing with chunks of text etc even these aren't as good as the humble "rodent".

Cheers

I don't know how I'm not consistent....touch is going to replace the mouse. That's been my mantra for a long time now.

Actually, I've already done that to test out touch capabilities, but it was on an older two point touch screen. Worked totally fine, really goes to show how well the Ribbon was designed, not only for the mouse, but ideal for touch.

Coke seems to suffer from a pathological hatred of the mouse and the start menu.

I don't know if there is any treatment available for that.

You have to feel sorry for him.

Back in 1987 I went out and bought a Mac Plus computer which came with the mouse. Now prior to having a computer without a mouse you had to now all the keyboard short cuts. After about a week of using the mouse I knew that going backward to keyboard short cuts would never happen. When people came by to visit they would see me working with the mouse and laugh, and of course I would look at them and say something truly profound like the mouse will be the way of the future in computing, and of course they would laugh.

Fast forward to today, and the mouse is the only true way to work within the computing environment. Touch is nice, albeit you cannot work with CAD programs, drawing programs (Canvas 14, Illustrator, etc.), or any program which requires a really fine touch. I mean can you see Thomas Kindaid, or Lee Bogle (uses air brush to do his beautiful water colors) using touch to do their work.

Touch is nice, but will it take the place of the mouse; in truth no.

Not bad.

Even if you personally don't use a mouse anymore, that prediction is a bit two soon; 10years from now we'll still use mice, on a world-scale, it will take more than that.

(Unless our old hardware gets replaced for free, not even then... don't forget the possible mouse-fans)

When I'll need to travel with a computer or a semi=advanced device, I'll buy one. But the point is, in my case, I must need it before I buy it.

Buy a backpack and carry the tower. Be mobile, cheaper.
