Zipper trouble

Cough... My zip problem ... After reverting to Win 7 I still can't open zip files downloaded in Win 8. Strange that. Also, I mounted the iso just using Win 7 to see its contents. Zips now download & open fine in Win 7. So back to your discussion....

Sure, of course not. The zips are corrupted by the security you had in 8. Delete them.

If you would have follow my first response, you'd be using 8 well still. But glad you have a working OS in any case. :)

Agreed

lehnerus2000, the only thing for sure that happened is that something corrupted the bootloader in between the time that you booted up and when you shut down after installing the new driver.

Agreed.
In that particular case, we also know that the actual driver code was sound (as GMan implied).
The same installer correctly installed the driver the 2nd time.

The other problems I mentioned were different, because no matter how many times I installed the update (and uninstalled it) the problem persisted.
It was only fixed by installing the previous driver (or the subsequent update weeks later).

Ironically I've never had any problems with updates delivered through Windows Update (driver, Office or Windows).
Many people do.

I suspect that a lot of problems are actually caused by weird software interactions.
After they've been installed, too many programs run "useless" services.

AV programs are the main suspects (and culprits) due to the way they work.

A lot of installers still recommend shutting everything off, before starting the installation.

I did once have an issue on my old MSI x320 laptop, where Windows Update installed a new graphics driver which ****ed up the screen. I booted into safe mode, reverted the driver to the previous version, and rebooted. Unfortunately, I had Update set to automatic, so it just auto****ed itself again. I reverted again, making sure to take measures to avoid that update.

I had chalked it up to my graphic chip being an Intel GMA 500, which was a Piece of rubbish outsourced to one company with the drivers outsourced to another company.

Gman, are you saying my Trend antivirus corrupted the zip? The file was the right length and nothing was flagged up by Trend. Yet no zip utility could open it, not even for a repair. I also don't fancy going online without protection to try your theory! Sierra Chow!

You could always use Windows 8's built-in antivirus... it's there for a reason.

First time I've had a bluescreen in years. A report was sent to MS.

Yes, and I'm also saying it is extremely likely that it also caused your bsod, without having any dump provided to look at.

I don't give theories unless I say they are. I gave you excellent advice, none better.

^^^^ As IceFire says.

I bow to your knowledge. Does the G in Gman stand for God?:p

lol no, it stands for "gangsta" - it goes about 12-14 years ago when I taught my computer illiterate brother how to encode videos and put CDAudio instead of the cheap TVAudio captured sound, at the time. He was heavily into hip-hop/rap then and we together under the IRC nick KoolG released tons of music videos for the scene. I'm a metal dude though heh.

On another note, I believe you misunderstood the intent of when I said "none better". I did not intend me as a person, but rather the advice given in this specific instance. (There was none other given and I'm not comparing to anyone personally.)
