Windows update failed and took space

Its all very odd I think, and its not simply an error in the way Windows reports space either because I see the increases and decreases reflected in my daily incremental backups. What I did note, was that yesterdays backup (before the disk clean) showed a large change in backed up data that couldn't be accounted for in normal use... perhaps Windows had already marked stuff for deletion or had done a lot of file shuffling in anticipation of the next clean up.

KB3083711 (update for Windows Update Client) appeared today. A lowly 3.5Mb in size. After installing I find 500Mb has been knocked off my free space.

Just a sayin'

KB3083711 (update for Windows Update Client) appeared today

I get "worried" when the only explanation of an update on Microsoft's sites is "This is an update":

This article describes an update that contains some improvements to Windows Update Client in Windows 8.1...

Note- the OTHER update that showed up on my system, 2976978, is just more Microsoft-style spyware: Windows 'snooping' and nagging patches return, including KB 3035583, KB 2952664 | InfoWorld
