I have a crazy issue going on and I'm pretty much at my wits end trying to figure out what the issue is.
I have a custom built desktop running Windows 8 x64 and a Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop that I have upgraded to Windows 8 x64 as well. Both are running different purchased, 100% legal copies of Windows 8.
The issue started when I decided to reformat my desktop (which I do fairly frequently - once or twice a year usually as I'm extremely OCD about keeping things clean) and reinstall everything. Upon reinstallation of Windows 8, I tried to perform Windows Updates and received an 8024402F error message. I scoured Google trying to find answers to my problem and did everything from restarting the BITS and update services, running the Microsoft FixIts, etc, but nothing seemed to fix the issue. I also did a malware scan with MalwareBytes and a system file check - both of which came up with nothing.
I decided something must have gotten corrupt with the OS. Reformatted and reinstalled again. Same issue. Thought it may be a failing hard disk. Tried installing it on another hard drive. Same issue.
Attempted to perform updates on my laptop to see if Windows Updates were down or something - they worked fine. Decided to take a gamble and reformatted my laptop as well with its copy of Windows 8 to see if the desktop Windows 8 copy had been scratched or damaged somehow and hoped that would be the issue. Upon completion of the laptop reinstall, I received the exact same error code I got on my desktop. I then attempted to upgrade my laptop to Windows 8.1 (which I have never installed before) to see if maybe that would make updates work, but received the same error code.
I then became desperate and tried to install my old copy of Windows 7 back on my desktop in a last ditch effort to find something that would work, but the error code followed me there too.
Thought by some off chance it may have been an issue with my modem, but called the ISP and they said it was working properly as far as they could see on their end.
So now I sit with two computers that cannot receive any updates what-so-ever and at a total loss as to how to fix either of them. If anyone has any ideas what the issue could be I would be very grateful for input!
