So what is the deal with this???

I had a new PC with Windows 7 Pro. I did the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade offer for $15. I have Windows 8 Pro installed and activated successfully. Then I realized no WMC, so after some research I find out you can get it for free before Jan 31, 2013.

it would help if you said what country you're from. maybe there's a region restriction.

I live in Houston, Texas USA.

I also tried this on my home laptop via wifi connection. Same problem.

Tried in on my work laptop on work network, same problem.

I guess I will call MS tomorrow at work if I can find the time, but this is really kinda ridiculous.

I applied for, and received my WMC key not long after they were announced, it's been sitting in my inbox for months.
I installed Windows 8 Pro retail version two days ago, did all the updates, then tried the WMC key.
It installed and activated without a hitch.
Wonder what I did wrong?

Oh, I've taken a system image so I should be able to avoid any activation problems in the future.

I got my Media Center upgrade key on 26/10/2012 - a few days before I received my upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. Upgraded to Pro then WMC without a hitch using the upgrade key in Add Features...

Recently I checked if Add Features to Windows was still there, and it has disappeared - The executable WindowsAnytimeUpgrade.exe is also gone.

Any ideas how to reinstate this - without resorting to a reset or refresh?

SFC /scannow has failed to replace it.

I wouldn't think there is any real need to put it back? There aren't any features to add. 8 Pro + MC is as good as it gets.

At the moment, Alpha, you're right, but what about the future - upgrading to the next Windows version perhaps - just a thought.

If it's needed for something like that Microsoft would just re enable it with an update. Trying to get it back on your own is more than likely just going to mess something up.

An interesting snippet -

Earlier this evening, I was benchmarking my new windows 8 Pro/WMC installation
with SiSoft SANDRA (the latest 'free' version, updated for Windows 8).

It consistently showed my OS as being 'Windows 8 Ultimate', so the reason 'Add
Features' is gone is presumably because there's nothing left to update to.

I have 2 Win8 Computers Both are legitimate MS software.

I had no trouble downloading the Key & software on the first one.

I have tried down loading a key for the second one put the download for the key is consistently refused. I have tried different Email accounts Etc.

It directed me to the Microsoft land line (HELP CENTER?) in Ireland.

It was an automated phone & did not offer or respond to my problem. (My usual experience with Help Centers!)

I expected more from Microsoft

I can't find the place to put the product key. When it opens up the add features there is NO place to enter a product key. I want to make sure I have it activated by Jan. 31st.

Here's how to check that you've activated Media Center, if you think you have but aren't 100% sure:

1) Go to the System part of Control Panel . (A number of ways to get there but I use the <WindowsKey>+X shortcut then select "System".)
2) Look for "Windows edition" near the top of the screen. If it says "Windows 8 Pro with Media Center" then you've activated Media Center.
3) If you have requested more than one Media Center product key, then you can also find out which key you used by clicking on the "View details in Windows Activation" link at the bottom of this screen.
4) From this Windows Activation screen, it shows "Current Product Key". The last few characters of this should match the last few characters of the Media Center product key you used on this computer, which you can check against the reminder emails.
