Hi Brink, thanks for your vote of confidence and wishing well. Indeed it was easy...even for me.

Wow....W8 64bit must be huge, twice the Vista Home Premium. It took twice as many 4.7GB-DVD'S(six) and twice as long.
Pappi-I too have HP Envy DV7. I tried to create recovery media to USB Memory but would not complete. It would show various steps and would succeed in copying to USB but at some point in verification step would get a message that failed and try again. Looking at the USB files I think it succeeded but chatted with HP Support about my concern. After some back and forth the agent agreed to send disks to me that would reinstall Windows 8 and all drivers if needed. You might contact HP Support.

Odd that you mentioned contacting HP people:

Since April 3rd, the day I ordered Envy dv7t, I have been in daily "war" with many HP supervisors all the way up to CEO level. My HP experiences were so disgusting that I eventually decided to cancel my order and sever all connections with HP. It is still ongoing but I am hoping in due time I am HP free.

I have contacted LONOVO but unfortunately its 17 inch models do not have backlit keyboard but I was advised to wait a few weeks because it is already in the agenda in the coming months.

Which brings to mind: (1) can anyone else use the 6 dvd recovery discs I created from the HP W8 laptop that I returned.? (2) do I still have to create same recovery discs when I get my new non-HP W8 laptop?

In a word that "sucks". Bad PR when company is shortsighted by contact people. Unhappy customers leave and tell many about it. Glad I did not pop for the service contract and only with the standard 2 year that came with purchase. I have an ASUS laptop I have been happy with. You might check out their line up. Hope you get things sorted out.
