Windows 8 Won't Shutdown or Restart

Odd.. Try uninstalling your ASUS AI charger (as the last install before the symptom came out), and see if it has an effect. The last resort then you need to do a system reset. But surely you have all important data backed up. I had that issue with my ASUS when running WDP but were fine with WRP and RTM.

Edit:
It's about my bed time. Reach you tomorrow then. ;)

Found out the problem.

I had a usb 3.0 pci card in the machine. Removed it and it reboots no problem.

Note to self - Don't buy cheap USB 3.0 cards from Amazon!

Good to hear that.
Just curious. Are you sure it was that PCI card itself or any trouble of the driver handling the card?

Hi Giga Hawk. Welcome to the forum. :)

Does it cycle back to the login or go directly there?

The screen reads "shutting down", then it goes black. But i can tell from the lights that the laptop is running. And as soon as i click a mouse button i am in the Login Screen.

I will check the event log later. For now, all i can say is that all drivers came with Windows or Windows Update except for the AMD graphics driver.

The card probably isn't the problem per se. More than likely, the card is emulating some standard chipset, but isn't doing it perfectly. Windows was fooled into installing a stock driver, and it caused problems.

If you had installed the manufacturers driver, it probably would have been ok. Although, there's a small chance even the manufacturers driver might not have been compatible with Windows 8.

From what I've been through toying with Win 8 since the WDP release (or other previous OSes). Clean install (or reinstall) always provide me better result. A chipset driver of certain version seems to be the matter?

For now, all i can say is that all drivers came with Windows or Windows Update except for the AMD graphics driver.

It looks like fast startup causes it on my system

May be, that has got something to do with hardware.

I tried uninstalling the AMD graphics driver and I can shutdown again with fast start activated!

I figured it might be that driver since it was the only one I manually downloaded from the Internet.

The version is 12-8_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe and it is the right driver for my graphics adapter (confirmed by the AMD Mobility Radeon™ Driver Verification Tool)

It seems that the AMD notebook graphics driver causes it. I didn't alter anything in the Catalyst settings. Maybe a bit fine tuning in the settings could fix it?

As for me, will I be fine without that driver? The currently installed driver is

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series(Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v1.20)
Driver Provider Advanced Micro Devices, Inc
Driver Date 19.06.2012
Driver Version 8.97.10.6

As a side effect, the Windows Experience Index improved slightly:
Desktop graphics performance 4.8 > 4.8
3D business and gaming graphics performance 6.1 > 6.2
