Windows 8 Sales Well Below Projections, Plenty of Blame

only reason I upgraded to win7 when I did was that I entered MS contest to host a win7 coming out party and won! they sent me a box of party favors and a signed copy of win7 32bit 64bit ,running win8 now ,only because I got chosen to be a MS ,MVP the past 4 years and got win8 for free to evaluate ,would likely still be using XP if it weren't for that

everyday I spend hours in a electronic store's computer repair shop ,wish I had a dollar for every time the tech or myself asked customer [with a broken computer ]what OS winxp /vista or win7 is on the computer they didn't know for sure ,would just say one of those ,I'm not sure !!for the average user ,the OS on there computer is there because it was there when they bought the computer
Same here, I have to resort to asking them sometimes if there is a green button with a blue line on the bottom of the screen, or black line on the bottom with a shininess to it, or asking them if the bottom has icons on it; Windows xp, vista, and 7 respectively.

You must have deliberately misunderstood.

The reason win8 is not doing well - is because people do not want it.

Period.
I think it's a combination of the fact that people aren't that terribly excited about it. And I think lots have moved away from using their personal computers on a daily basis to doing their web based stuff on their smartphones and their tablets. Therefore, they don't use their home personal computers like they used to in the past.

After reading Pauls article, he made a lot of good points. I agree with one statement in particular.
I actually like Windows 8 quite a bit and can’t imagine switching back.

Kind of where I am. With all its faults, I like it also but understand others do not. Only time will tell if Windows 8 will succeed and I have no way of predicting the outcome.

BINGO! That's what MS is thinking also and they tried to cover all the bases with a common interface. Will it work? Only time will tell.

Look, the fact of the matter is PC sales are down. Not just a little. But a LOT. less than half what they were a few years ago.

The reasons for this is the same reason in the decline of land phone lines. People are going Mobile, and they don't see a need for a desktop PC. If they do, they'll use the one at work or school or whatever.

With the huge slump in PC sales, and the huge increase in mobile sales, this is precisely why Windows 8 was designed the way it was.

I think it's VERY early to judge how well Windows 8 is or isn't doing, largely because it's unlikely that we'll see sales numbers for new Windows 8 PC's and devices until after Christmas. All we have now are the small percentage of people that have upgraded their desktop PC's to Windows 8, and that market has always been a tiny percentage of users.

It's funny though, *EVERY* time Microsoft releases a new OS, we get this same crap. People aren't upgrading. That's right, because historically, and it's still true, people don't usually upgrade their OS. And you know what? It never meets expectations, because the expectations are a) either over-estimated by the press or b) bravado by the company trying to encourage people to upgrade by saying all your friends will do it.

This is nothing new, and this says nothing about Windows 8. There is nothing of value to be gleaned from any early figures that are released.

Yeah, I'm not sure yet if the MS tablets are going to take off or just fizzle. The thing with Microsoft and PC's in general, is that people just expect them to be "cheaper" than Apple. With Surface tablets, being the same price range, I thing some people will simply say, "they are too much, they are nearly the same price as Apple, and if I'm going to spend that much money, I might as well buy the Apple".

People have this opinion that Apples are "higher quality", and can command the price premium. Regardless of whether the Surface can do more..many people won't even think about that.

Oh my gosh...every time some one tells me about this, I always think about this image and how subjective it is.

Windows 3.1 was good, but nowhere near Windows 95 in terms of capability. Almost everyone that lived though that transition will tell you that 95 was a HUGE improvement over 3.11. Windows 95's new UI was the model for about 15 years in Windows and is the UI model people want back. Windows 98 was an improvement over 95, to an extent. They released a Second Edition I think like a year after to fix some flaws with it, much like a service pack. The reason why this is considered good is because if you're fluent with the Windows registry, you can basically a lightweight Windows version on a custom built gaming rig and can get the latest hardware to work with software that doesn't even understand what it is. Windows ME and 2000 were again ok. The reason why they're considered shite is because Microsoft ripped out the ancient remains of DOS, which broke lots of compatibility with 9X devices. They were good because of NT 5 and it's security enhancements, which leads to xp, which also introduced a new UI design after three releases of grey and light blue UIs. This is considered good, primarily because it was used for almost a good decade in several incidences. BUT, until vista came along, it was a security whore. Seriously, if xp had a password, it would be password. That's how poor the security of xp was in a newer internet age of computing, of which it was partly designed for. vista was genuine shite. The only silver lining to it was better security whereas xp could had allowed user account hacking until SP3 rolled out. But again, it broke compatibility with existing software and hardware, and continued the 32 bit processor architecture even though many vista PCs were 64 bit capable, whereas xp didn't have 64 bit support until later in its release cycle. Now, some say that vista SP2 is decent enough to use, but Windows 7 came along and is literally the climax of the Windows 95 UI model. It's a solid workhorse that can be used for better and more efficient Desktop computing.

Windows 8 on the other hand is a new beast. It can be a supercharged Windows 7 for Desktop computing, or it can be used to take better advantage of the age of always-on always-connected internet computing. Or, it can be a mix of both. It's the Windows 95 of this generation. It's something new and something untested and something that will most likely be improved upon for probably another 15 years.

Simply put, people who say what this image says really are just repeaters of information of sweeping generalizations and don't actually take the time to understand it all.

omg you honestly thought "me" was "ok"? and vista was "genuine shite"? I had no problems with vista, though my machine at the time was over powered and I did deal with many friends who did have problems. wtf "me".. that sh1t crashed more often than.. mars rovers.. it was honestly the worst os I have ever used and we trust you when you say "
Windows 8 is G8! No need to H8
" :p

I can't comment on 3.1 or 95 as I didn't use them that much but yer 98se kicked arse and so did xp (where they finally got nt working) and no you can't fault win7 <3.

most "users" couldn't give a crap about this stuff (the pic was jk, though close to the troth). problem is they moved everything.. again. Your average user doesn't know their way around xp or 7 yet (I have seen posts here asking very basic windows questions) and they are scared of change.. see how many change Facebook back pages there are??

I fear the pic will come true.. win8 = beta, win9 will be what win8 should have been.

didn't have much experience with 2k, though did help a friend who had extreme pop-up problems, the os itself did seem stable and use-able... for a win98se update. going slightly off-topic now..

Problem is, we (as early adopters) will never understand "users" fully.. they are weird, they think they know what they are doing? no they just ignore every update.. click on the massive "download now" add and continue to install crap. Gotta love em they keep us busy lol.

and it is up to "them" weather this (windows 8) will be a success. Microsoft again missed the boat with tablets (and phones) and wants to create a unified experience for all of its users but doesn't realise that most of its users are inexperienced and scared of change. most of them still use ie ffs. This version of windows is doomed.. but I like it (despite the initial buggyness) and where it is leading :) and expect "users" will come around for the next version.

My bet was that the whole Windows 8 family (PC, tablets, phones) would fail and could be the grave of Microsoft.

APparently it is not only Windows 8 PC which is selling little. The tablets and phones seem to be a disaster (as expected).

I said that the whole concept was wrong and that each individual platform (PC, tablet and phone) had its own lot of mistaken ideas that people would reject.

So far it seems I could be right. Not that I care much since I have always used Windows without any special affection or disaffection, but just my opinion playing to guess.

I still think that if this fails, it could be not just a fiasco similar to Vista, but a gigantic one that could destroy Microsoft forever if Google or Apple moved smartly to gain the PC market share.

apple? no!!! never going back to that over priced low featured crap.. moved to android last year and haven't regretted it. Microsoft and windows (in some form or another) will survive... what are your options? yet another gui on top of Lynux! btw where is chrome os??

Nothing wrong with M$ or windoze (...), though they are not innovators they do provide working solutions... sometimes.. when it works and this does (kinda) but users will wait for us to say that everything is "ok" before committing and by then it will be too late for win8.

There you are. Many will say ME and 2000 were the duncebuckets of Windows along with vista, just as some will say vista was great for them whereas a huge chunk of people were plotting was on how to destroy their PC.

:p ;)
