There's only 1 version of the RP right? Nothing about having to choose a version to run like some rumors stated

Win 8 RP released: "And nothing of interest was released".

I want some of the drugs management at MS is taking if they think this piece of failware is going anywhere.

-- Brian
Have you actually used the Release Preview or are you going along with what the media says.The media said bad things about Vista and still do and Vista isn't that bad. Windows 8 is actually pretty good if people would stop crying and actually learn it. It has some cool new features and is very fast.

I don't go by the media. I used the DP, CP and downloaded the RP as soon as it was available. Yes, they fixed a few glitches that people that LIKE the metro interface were complaining about, but it is STILL there. It is hideous and not meant to be used as a desktop interface.

PS: Look up my posts on the vista forums, I loved it since M1 -- but I had the hardware to handle it. My hate of Win8 isn't about hardware, it is about the hideous, God awful ugly, mouse / keyboard UNFRIENDLY, interface. Did I mention God awful ugly?

I must say I'm astonished how fast the Win8 RP is. Everything runs so smoothly and the computer boots in literally no time at all!

Don't do it, Brian! You'll start using Windows Vista if you do!

I'd actually PREFER to.......at least it has a decent UI. And a bit of eye-candy.

    Borderline pathetic.
Downloaded and installed, dual boot with Windows 7. Had some hurdles to overcome to get it installed and working properly. If I had to describe it in one word it would be "WHY". Why is it so unintuitive? Seems like a big step backward to me. :(

Tried doing an upgrade using Windows8-ReleasePreview-UpgradeAssistant.exe and got the same error others mentioned about my computer not supported for Win 8.

Booted the iso Windows8-ReleasePreview-64bit-English.iso and did a clean install to the same drive I had the Customer Preview install to and all is well. Took about 30 minutes on my Dell Precision 370, P4 3.4Ghz Dual Thread, 4GB Ram, oodles of drive space.

As others have said, it's quick.

I installed RP in vBox where I ran CP all along - but on my system in FL where it was very fast. Here it runs like molasses. Is practically unuseable. This system is a Q6600 with a Vertex2 SSD. Gave vBox 2GB of RAM and 20GB of disk space.

Then I made a seperate partition trying to install it there. Burnt the .iso to DVD and ran the installation .exe. It never gave me a chance to select the partition to where I wanted to install. It just destroyed my Win7 partition. So I had to set back to yesterday's image.

What a shambles. I think I stick with my Ubuntu in vBox which runs perfectly well. And I do have vBox 4.1.16 and the corresponding extensions. Guest additions were also enabled.

I found much the same. The problem was the experimental WDDM 3D as usual so I uninstalled that driver and used the SetExtraData trick to get a proper resolution in Full Screen mode and it runs just fine.

Did you run setup.exe in the Sources directory or the one in root?

Thanks Jim for pointing that out. That must have been it. I'll try that later. Right now I am trying again in vBox with the hint that Keith posted. We'll see. I prefer the vBox setup because it is so handy.

Yes Wolfgang.

1. Install Guest Additions.
2. Go into device manager and uninstall the WDDM driver. You will need to power off the machine as you now have no video.

3. Edit the .vbox file using a text editor (it's an xml file). I used Notepad++
4. Locate the <ExtraData> section and add a line like the top line below.

<ExtraData>
<ExtraDataItem name="CustomVideoMode1" value="1366x768x32"/>

<ExtraDataItem name="GUI/Fullscreen" value="on"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="GUI/LastCloseAction" value="powerOff"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="GUI/LastGuestSizeHint" value="1024,768"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="GUI/LastNormalWindowPosition" value="8,27,1024,687"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="GUI/LastScaleWindowPosition" value="122,108,1128,608"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="GUI/MiniToolBarAlignment" value="top"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="GUI/SaveMountedAtRuntime" value="yes"/>
<ExtraDataItem name="GUI/ShowMiniToolBar" value="yes"/>
</ExtraData>

The fields are width,height and color depth. You can have more than one, just replace the 1 with 2 etc.

5 Fire up the VM and you will find the resolutions added available for you to select.

That of course is not the official way of doing it. You could do it with VboxManage cammand line but this is easier.

I downloaded both the 32bit along with the 64bit iso but went with the 64bit from the start. The installation from the dvd burned took as long as Vista to install. First the slow loading upto the Install Now screen and the configuration after the first restart.

If you download the exe version that will simply replace the existing Windows installation since you are running that while booted in the present Windows install you have on. No thanks! I unplugged the 7 host drive for a stand alone on the second drive here.

With the VM Player the 4.01 was problematic for the CP as far as connecting online fixed in the 4.02 February release. Now it seems you will need a 4.03 to install the RP on VM. The RP installer kept failing to initialize despite attempts by selecting iso as well as with the dvd.
