Windows 8 really isn't that bad

I'm expecting that a lot of them will have dozens of "Live Tiles" running adverts 24/7.

FYI...Live Tiles don't run adverts at all, the purpose of a Live Tile is to display live information not adverts.

That's what they do at the moment.

Advertisers claim their output is "information".

Just like all of those toolbars in that picture.
None of those logos are advertising, they're "information".

I tried the RTM on my main PC, and immediately started wacking things like Classic Shell on to it. I didn't take to Windows 8 at all, and uninstalled it.

After I realised I wasn't going the right away on trying Windows 8. I was trying to make it too much like 7, and not trying it for what it is. I put it in to the VM server at work and got it up and running. I then customised it to something of my liking, and realised the Windows key is my best friend, and I can do everything with little to no mouse use, and it was easier to just type on the Start menu instead. I soon found myself actually starting to like it and how it all works, and may try it on my main PC sometime soon when I have more time.

FYI the "Hit the Windows key and start typing" feature exists right now in Windows 7 and except for the on screen graphics works exactly the same way as in Windows 8... This is more of a case that because Metro /removes/ functionality over the old start menu, you were forced to use a "new" feature than in fact always existed in Windows 7 but wasn't even necessary because the start menu got you where you needed to go 99% of the time instead of maybe 10% of the time like Metro does...

That's just the thing, to me. I've got Win8 in Virtual Box right now. I'll get into a session with it and find that I do one of two things:

1) Install the software I use on my Win7 equipment and use it exactly the same way.
2) Use the "Metro" Start Screen in the same way as I use the Win7 menu system.

I don't find that the Metro "Start Screen" provides any functionality that I don't already have. The only thing I don't have on the Win7 box is the flat looking Metro apps and Win8's flat desktop. The Metro apps (such as they are) work OK but provide what I consider duplicate functionality to what I've already got. So ... once again: I would upgrade for what reason?

    That's basically it.
Except it splits apps across multiple "task bars", obscures the entire screen for no reason, Metro apps full size on 24 in monitors for no reason, hides tons of functionality behind obscure mouse gestures or hot keys that were easily findable before, as well as the complete removal of some functionality and a blandification of the desktop.

In short, it doesn't add much if anything at all (positive) to the desktop experience, it just removes, hides, traps and rearranges everything. :(

Speaking of apps, I was perusing through the Windows Store in the first time since a week or so, and it seems app development is going rather steady. Anyways, I found an app that makes it all worthwhile. It's a little Star Wars app and ALL that is it is just the classic Darth Vader Nnnnnnnooooooo!!!! soundboard. Perfect!! :D

:) There are several apps worth having like USA Today or Newegg, but that one just really makes me happy. It's perfect if I'm having a hard drive issue, Windows To Go drive issues, network connectivity issues, first world problems, and telling people no.

Just curious you guys. You are AWARE if you move your mouse pointer to the very top of the screen it will change into a hand, then you press your left mouse button, and all the applications that are running will be seen when the Start screen will be only a quarter of the screen size.

pparks, and Frank this has to be done in the standard old fashion Windows interface, just move your mouse to the center top of your screen and it will turn into a hand, hold down your left mouse button and pull it down the screen will resize to a 1/4 of the actual size and you will/can see what open programs are there. Furphies

FYI the "Hit the Windows key and start typing" feature exists right now in Windows 7 and except for the on screen graphics works exactly the same way as in Windows 8...

A lot of Metro fans tout this as a spectacular new feature, exclusive to W8.

BTW, I'm not saying that Everlong did this. :)

It's just like, "The Metro Screen is customisable. You can't customise the old Start Menu" furphy that is regularly trotted out.

That is true.

There are installers that replace those buttons with "Accept" and "Decline", just to trick you into installing crapware (if you aren't paying attention).
