Windows 8 Pro to be priced at $199 following $69.99 promotion pricing

Microsoft's Windows 8 Pro software will be priced at $199 after a promotional price of $69.99 expires on January 31st 2013, according to one source familiar with Microsoft's plans.

The software maker will also offer a Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro upgrade option at retail stores for $69.99 until January 31st when the price reverts to $99.99.


Microsoft previously announced its $39.99 Windows 8 Pro upgrade pricing for existing Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 users — a price available exclusively online for those wishing to download the software without a DVD option.

Retailers will stock a $69.99 Windows 8 Pro option in stores, one that may be offered as a traditional full version of Windows for those without a previous copy.

Both the Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 Pro copies will be made available from retailers on October 26th.

The university that I'm attending is offering Windows 8 Professional for free, downloading now. I won't be using 8 as my primary OS, I'll stick to 7 but still worth it if I'm getting it for free. Meh, my hope is that a service pack will be released to change the Metro interface to something that is a bit more "workable".

What in the world, are you sure it's not just the download that's free but you have to obtain a key? I'm not sure how they would be able to just hand it out for free.

Key included, the university doesn't "hand" it out. There's a service called "Microsoft Dreamspark". I got my copy of Windows 7 Professional this way. I should have provided more details, apologies for the confusion. :eek:

^ Ok, that makes sense. I'm familiar with DreamSpark. It's meant to be used in school persuits to develop in the areas of science, math, technology and engineering. Unsure about EULA restrictions and so forth with it's use. I know I don't qualify myself for the program, but I have MSDN for my work use. At home, I'm on retail.

Yes, you can upgrade from RP for that price( win 8 Pro upgrade $40) according to rumours. I am waiting for the equivalent price in £.

Well I wasn't sure what version it was so I sent an email to PC world and they told me it was the full retail edition. Didn't think about the 'home builder', is that the same as OEM? Now I am really confused :confused:

Hard to tell what that means.

It might the same as the $69.99 US offer.

Previously a straight $ to £ was expected .

As far as I have read their is no Full Retail version, at least by that name. It looks like the Home Builder is the new Full Retail with a different name as it can be transferred to another PC.
