If the Auto Repair does not work, let us know if you can boot to the Enterprise DVD at least to the first page of the install where it asks for a language. We may be able to replace the BCD store from that location.

Windows 8 was supposed to be designed so the Recovery Environment was not tied to the OS install. You would still be able to boot and get a Repair option even if your OS partition was trashed. But it looks like several situations seem to be causing corruption or damage in the extra partitions also. Why something would bother the Recovery or System partition, I do not know.

I'm having the same error (code).

You may borrow a Windows 8 disk from a friend and boot from this disk
Select the correct time and Keyboard type.
Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner.
Select Troubleshoot from Choose an option screen.
Click Advanced options in Troubleshoot screen.
Click on command Prompt.
Type these following commands and hit enter after each line of command:
Bootrec /fixmbr
Bootrec /fixboot
Bootrec /scanos
Bootrec /rebuildbcd

I have an empty 4gb flash drive, and a windows 7 computer but the problem occurs on my w8.1 laptop. is there any way to fix this without affecting/deleting any files at all?

You receive the following error message:

The Boot Configuration Data file is missing some required information.
File:\BCD
Error code: 0xc0000034

And you can't refresh or reset.

Refresh your PC: "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."

Reset your PC: "Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing."

How do you repair the problem.

- Boot the computer using the Windows 7/8 installation media.
- On the first screen, press SHIFT+F10 to bring up command prompt.

-or-

- Boot the computer using the Windows 8 recovery USB flash drive.
- select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.

Run the following commands at the command prompt.

diskpart
list volume NOTE: Note the volume letter where the Windows OS is installed.
exit

bcdboot X:\windows NOTE: Replace "X" with the volume letter of the Windows OS partition.

For example, bcdboot c:\windows or bcdboot d:\windows (see screenshots below).

If the drive letter is incorrect, you will receive the following error message: "Failure when attempting to copy boot files."

I'm currently working on a friend's PC that has this same issue. However, regardless of choosing the correct drive or not, it gives me the failure to copy boot files error. Any suggestions would be awesome, as he can't afford to pay for a professional-grade data recovery.

Do not delete the partitions on your hard drive, if you have important files on your hard drive and you will not be able to backup your important files.

- Select the partition on which Windows is installed (see screenshot below).
- Click on the "Next" button.

- You will receive the following message (see screenshot below): If the partition you've chosen contains files from a previous Windows installation, these files and folders will be moved to a folder named Windows.old. You'll be able to access Windows.old, but you won't be able to use your previous version of Windows.

- Click on the "OK" button.
- The installation of Windows will begin.
