Windows 8 is a one way street for consumer PC users

If you buy a Windows 8-powered HP consumer PC, or from any other PC vendor, you'll get no help from them if you decide you'd rather have Windows 7. And Linux? Forget about it!

PC companies call it downgrading, but many users just call it being sensible. You buy a new computer, and instead of using the bleeding edge operating system it came with, you move to an operating system you trust. With ordinary Windows 8 on Hewlett-Packard (HP) consumer PC, or any other vendor's retail PC, though, you're stuck with Windows 8.

The next computer I buy won't be for a few years, since the one I have is only 2 years old and I usually upgrade every 5 years, so by then Windows 9, or whatever they name it, will probably be out and hopefully Microsoft combines the best aspects of Windows 7 and 8 to make an OS for desktops that totally rocks. :D

JBfoster, what chipset the Surface Pro will use , did Intel design a new one for it? , What sound chips, what camera model and manufacturer , ? What touchscreen manufacturer and model ?

How on Earth can you say it will work with Windows 7, you have no idea if drivers are available for Windows 7

Oops I missed the word not. I meant to say Windows 7 won't work as well as Windows 8.

Its my under standing that Windows 7 does have a limited support for touch. That's why I said what I said.

I went online to the MS Store and they have some new Tablets on pre-order that run Windows 8 (Not RT) and are using the Intel Atom Z2760 1.80 GHz which is Intel's new Clover Trail chip. This may be where the Surface is going also.

HP clarifies Windows 8 consumer PC downgrade and warranty

HP isn't supporting consumer PCs downgrades from Windows 8 to Windows 7. However, the company has clarified that, if you do change operating systems anyway, your consumer Windows 8 PCs will still be under warranty .

It's been a confusing few days in HP laptop and desktop land. For a brief time, it appeared that HP would support Windows 8 consumer PCs downgrading to Windows 7. Microsoft would not have been amused! Microsoft's official licensing policy restricts Windows 8 downgrades to Windows 8 Pro users.

After I spoke several times with HP, we now know what's what with HP's Windows 8 consumer PCs. HP told me, "HP has updated this post, providing additional information that should clarify this topic for HP customers" and the official HP Windows 8 to Windows 7 downgrade answer is:

for me the best option is to purchase the parts I need to build the best PC, no Manufacturers PCs come close in performance to the PCs I builds
