Windows 8 Could Make Its Public Debut Next Week

If what Bloomberg's preview is correct(quote: three people with knowledge of the company’s plans.); this is more specific report of what MS is going to show in D9 & Computex:

Microsoft Is Said to Plan Preview of New Windows Tablet Operating
System

By Ian King and Dina Bass - May 27, 2011 4:14 AM GMT+0800

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) will preview its Windows operating system designed
for tablet computers in demonstrations planned for next week, according to three
people with knowledge of the company’s plans.

The company will showcase the software’s touch-screen interface running on
hardware with an Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) Tegra chip, said the people, who declined
to be identified because the plans are confidential. Windows President Steven
Sinofsky is scheduled to present at the All Things D conference, while Vice
President Steve Guggenheimer will address the Computex show in Taipei.

Microsoft is rushing to adapt Windows to better support devices that can
compete with Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPad, which dominates the tablet market. The
new operating system won’t be out until next year, people familiar with the
plans said in March. Still, the company is eager to show it is moving forward,
seeking to generate demand among computer makers and chip suppliers.

Nvidia’s Tegra microprocessor is based on the ARM Holdings Plc (ARM)
technology that dominates the smartphone market. ARM-based chips are also used
in the iPad and tablets that run Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system.

Mark Martin, a spokesman for Microsoft, declined to comment. The company’s
shares rose 48 cents, or 2 percent, to $24.67 at 4 p.m. New York time on the
Nasdaq Stock Market. Nvidia gained 46 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $18.82.

Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer said earlier this week that
machines with the new operating system, which he referred to as Windows 8, would
be released in 2012.

Ok seriously does windows 8 actually do anything that windows 7 can't as of what anyone's seen so far?

YEa there are tons, like they changed the 7 to an 8, and um relabeled IE9 to IE10. UMM, they changed the boot screen and the way it installs. and made WIN 7 Mode which is like XP mode but they just change all the images back to IE9 and Win 7. SOME GREAT FEATURES!!
Seriously haven't you even looked at any of the threads?

Thanks to the last two posters for bringing the thread down to earth again. So far, the only new features I have been able to view have been "unlocked" items from pirated copies. (Four altogether) The remainder are, at this stage, rumours. I do not doubt that there will be new features, otherwise Microsoft are wasting their time.. But, they did that with the transition from Vista to Windows 7. IMO the rumoured new features that I have seen , (I am an average user, I would reckon) are, about 90%, features for which I will have no use, or which I am running in third part, paid for, software.

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
I just heard that the beta version of Windows 8, build 8000, is about to be leaked. Is this true? If it is,

Well, for me, a colorful SOD would be appealing, with Aero effects. :thumb:

The point behind a BSOD is because the system failed. I highly doubt you could manage to get a really colorful BSOD.
Well mckillwashere, I was just imagining. I'd wish that I'd have a colorful SOD. Come on, we are humans after all, have some fun in the living process, and not be so glum like a typical computer would be. :D

I agree TB - I'd like a pic of my ex-wife as the SOD, just to remind me the siuation could be worse. I'd call it my Savour Our Divorce screen.

In all this, I can't help but wonder on MS business plan. Windows 7 is selling very well, it's likely many corporations will be making the switch, and now they throw 8 into the mix. Surely it will make many wait to be sure they don't miss out on the next big thing. And the wait would likely extend well after the actual release, as people wait to see if it is a winner, or a flop. A Guy
.

Windows 7 is a great OS, but it does not work so well on tablets (which seem to be the latest fad following iPad hype).
Microsoft needs Windows 8 to fill the touch friendly void fairly quickly.

I think they are also well aware of benefits of involving enthusiasts at an early stage.
We help identify deficiencies, bugs and potential user interface improvements.
We also help generate a fair bit of hype which spills over to the workplace, especially if we if we think the OS is good.
It doesn't cost them anything either.
