Windows 8 Actually Sucks.

Just had a look at the ICS service, and it says 'stopping' and also doesn't give me an option to restart the service. Perhaps we have stumbled across the problem, although I am sure I have done this before .....

Okay, firstly thanks for the response from everybody.

Coke Robot: You can share a 3G dongle's internet to connect to Xbox live, as many people have been able to do so, and i have also when I had windows 7 and xp.

pparks1: I do know of some other ways to share the connection either virtual router plus or purchasing a router. I have considered purchasing a router, but I would first need to find the correct router which would be able to cater to my needs. I have also tried using virtual router plus, which can be used to share my dongles internet to wirelessly connect my Xbox up. What annoys me is that you could do this on windows 7 without using a program.

However,

goodintentions: I have tried using virtual router plus, and at first it seemed great and was working perfectly. But then i discovered i would have to purchase an additional version of virtual router to be able to share my dongles internet. If it was free it would be fine, but i don't want to purchase something that may not work correctly.

So does anyone have any other suggestions? or could anyone point me into the right direction to purchasing the correct router required for my needs ?

Try connec8. I wasn't going to suggest it because it's still technically in beta. But it works good enough.

Tried Virtual Router Plus again and I keep getting the error message 'Virtual router could not be started. Supported hardware may not have been found.'

You may have other problems then... DO this test: 1) Check if your Firewall is started 2) Try to share a drive or folder.

If you can't then your OS is seriously compromised.

I never thought of using the command prompt to set up an Ad Hoc, nevertheless when trying to connect to xbox live it still fails to connect to the internet section.

Have you tried connec8? I linked to it a few posts ago.

You may be having another problem if you can't connect to it via ad hoc. I'm guessing your firewall is preventing the connection.

Yeaah, I did try using connec8 but again I got the same results, I always make sure both windows and Norton firewalls are turned off when trying to connect. I'm going to un-install Norton quickly and try it then.

Unfortunately, I do not have 3g dongle, so I have no way of testing this out for you. I have set up someone's w8 machine to act as an ad hoc. So, I know it works perfectly if set up right. I'm just trying to figure out what could be the problem.

Unfortunately, the best way for me to diagnose the problem is to have the machine in my hands. Such is the limitation of online support.

Okay after uninstalling Norton I still could not connect to Xbox live. I'm really at a loose end now as to what I can do now, and this is the reason behind my frustration to begin with. I just can't quite understand why Ms have seemed to take a step backwards with windows 8. What about sharing my dongles internet with a router and connecting to Xbox live with that router? I think this is really the only option i have now. Again, I appreciate the response and help from everyone.

I'm just making sure I understand you correctly.

You have a windows 8 laptop. You have a 3g dongle connected to the laptop. The 3g dongle gives you internet access. You want to use your wifi card as a wifi hotspot source. You want to connect your xbox to this wifi source.

If all of the above are correct, then could you please tell me something. At what stage of the connectivity does the connection attempt fails? For example, your xbox fails to find the wifi source. Your xbox finds your wifi source but is unable to connect. Etc.

Yes that's perfectly correct. The Xbox recognises and finds the wifi source or ethernet cable. The Xbox is able to connect to the source and to my pc. But it is not able to connect to the internet. The connection test looks like this:

Xbox 360 ----------> Wifi Source ----X----> Internet ----X----> Xbox Live
(or Ethernet)

The X's represents where the connection fails.

Also when I run a pc connection test on the Xbox it works fine.

Xbox 360 --------> Wifi Source --------> PC
(Or Ethernet)

Well I have an iPod 4 and I've tried connecting that. Again it finds the wifi connection, it can connect to the wifi connection. but I cannot access the internet on it. I have the three bars of wifi on the iPod, but when I try to access the internet for example safari, it just does not work. Something must be stopping devices from using my 3g dongles shared internet.
