Ok, Sorry for the confusing title.
So, I upgraded my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 to Windows 8 Pro (64 bit) and I have to say I am very happy with the OS, but sadly I am having issues, which seem to be affecting a number of different packages I have installed on my PC.
I don't know if all issues are related to one root cause or if I have a number of issues that have manifested independently of each other, but here are a list of symptoms that I have experienced:
Square Enix (for Sleeping Dogs) support said I need to uninstal the BasicRender drivers as these might be clashing with my GPU drivers but I can't seem to find how to do this.
Event Viewer is currently reporting 11 errors in the last 24 hours and 89 in the last 7 days, screenshot below.
Partly I think I should just reformat and install from fresh, but I feel I would learn more if I was to find out more about the tools that Windows has available and actually use them to fix this installation. Is anyone able to point me in the right direction to fix this please.

- Sleeping Dogs, this plays fine for a short while and then suddenly without warning the game switches from full screen to a window that fills most of the screen and is entirely black, audio playback is still working and using movement controls I can hear the game is still playing but I can't recover the game to full screen so I have to force quit
- Far Cry 3, this does something very similar to Sleeping Dogs, except the audio gets stuck in a short 2 to 3 second loop and I have to use Windows key + M to minimise all before I can open Task Manager where I can see the game has stopped responding and then end process
- McAfee All Access Total Protection - I have had this report that there is an error that has forced the protection to stop working and it is restarted, strangely this seems to happen frequently around 22:50 most evenings, not sure if there is a connection
- Chrome has reported that it has crashed a few times now
