Windows 8.1 won't boot, automatic repair failure

It means that you have a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 ST9500325AS 500GB hard drive.

One more test. go to this site, SeaTools, and download a bootable ISO and burn to disk.

Sorry for taking this long, wanted to backup some data while I could and ended up having too much work afterwards.
Either way, I did that and this came up before I could even run any tests.

Doesn't sound too good, SeaTools' documents say this is probably a driver failure :x

Nope, doesn't sound good at all. A visit to the repair shop for further diagnostics is in order and possibly changing the hard drive.

Ah, well, thanks for the help, Nuccii, at least managed to backup more recent stuff that I hadn't already.
Will try to see to repairs sometime this week.

I would hope nothing major. Always back up your data on a regular basis, goes a long way to control anxiety and safety of your data. Too many people do not perform their backups and have heartbreak when they lose it.

Good that you have backup!

But wait ...... didn't you say the machine was still under warranty?

Call Asus (they're very good) and describe the issue - your objective is for them to provide a RMA so you can send it back and have them repair the machine.

If you ask, they might be willing to send you a new HDD instead of sending the machine back and forth. HP did that for me, they sent a replacement HDD, I installed it and had to send the original back within 30 days or I'd be charged for the new drive.

If you go that route, make sure you ask if your installing the new HDD affects the remaining warranty - it shouldn't but you should ask.

I made a deal with store that sold me the laptop, any problem with the machine within 5 years they'll cover, I'm just taking it back so they can have a look themselves to see what's the problem exactly.
