Windows 10 could prompt upgrades of 600M aging PCs

Microsoft's Windows 10 is still in testing, but hardware makers can't wait for the day the OS replaces the controversial Windows 8.

Millions of PCs are aging, and those who have resisted Windows 8 will likely upgrade to computers with Windows 10. The initial reception to a test version of Windows 10 has been positive, as it resolves many usability issues affecting Windows 8.

There are about 600 million PCs that are four years or older, and those systems are ripe for upgrades, said Renee James, president at Intel, at the Credit Suisse Technology Conference on Tuesday.

I wish they would add the windowed apps feature as 10 has, to Windows 8.1, then 8.1 would be perfect (with Start8 menu included)

as long as its made an option
windowed apps is one of the things I dislike in 10 so far

I think they would be cool if the were like Gadgets which we have been told are security issues

I'd like to see windowed apps. Why not make them resizable like desktop programs are. Better yet, fix snap so it actually works like they say it should for Metro apps. It's fatally flawed in 10 and one of the reasons I ditched it and went back to 8.1. Full screen is OK if all you run is one app, I run several on one screen quit often.

Aren't we all just different.
I take the opposite view I never want to see no "apps" I never want to "sign up" to no Microsoft account or ever visit their store. I have all the programmes I will ever need on my desktop under a local account. After all "the cloud" is just somebody's server not some mythological super storage area in outer space. I have full control over my storage and back-ups both attached to the pc and detached from it.

Haaaaa - that's excellent (the Stones comment that is). I know, I don't get all of the hoopla over Windows 10. Like I said, if Vista had indefinite support, I'd really stay with it. But at least I can still shape Windows 8.1 to be enough how I want it.

Nothing wrong with Windows 10 TP, but it's just Windows 8x, yet everyone on the "10" Forums makes it sound like they're witnessing the second coming, you know?

'Apps' aren't synonymous with the cloud. They are just the same as regular programs really. You could use cloud featured apps, like onedrive, or a range of simple to complex ones, such as calculators or video. Alas, the MS account is true I think, but that is just your Hotmail, live, outlook.com etc. address, and is just for use in case the police need to come a-knocking at ya door (Just kidding).

I am of the opinion that if they didn't upgrade to 7 (the most clear and comprehendible OS to date, including my favorite Windows 8), that they won't jump for 10. They are the tech-less. The un-tech-savvy. The tech-haters-but-still-need-to-use-the-dimm-thing. The... you get my meaning.
