Will you upgrade? That is the question...

Hey guys, I meant to say my Cpu ran a few degrees hotter than it normally does on Windows 8. On Windows 8 my idle temps were between 55-60c.On Windows 7 at an idle it runs upper 40's to low 50'sc.Also on 3DMark 11 my physics(Cpu) scores at stock clocks on W7 were 9000-9400. On W8 I score 8500-9000.These AMD WDDM drivers suck. I hope when it goes to RTM I'll be able to use my current display drivers.

....... Yes, you can argue it's a bad OS and needs a price to match,

Why I should install a bad OS at discount or free ? Are We forced to install Windows 8 ? I don't think so.

LOL.

The poll results have changed since it was announced so cheap.

Indicates some will get if it's cheap - they wouldn't bother if it wasn't.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Reminds me of the Monty python sketch something like this ( fabricated the character names)

Edna: What have you bought there Doris?

Doris: A spitfire engine.

Edna: A spitfire engine ? What on earth for?

Doris: It was cheap.

There must be a vid of that sketch somewhere.

Ehhh. May not upgrade, as I have had to reinstall the 8 RP twice. If the retail version isn't more stable, then no.

I'd like to say yes right now for I like the metro screen for live tile info, organization, and lQQks. Also, if I can upgrade for forecasted Shibe price of $39.99. It also runs very well on my machine with a couple of minor glitches that aren't worth mentioning. I haven't installed all my programs yet, but what I have installed run well.

However, they need more and better quality apps. i.e. the Mail app, although works well, in no way is better than WM. I tweaked WM in, but one shouldn't have to. The news apps suck. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of options in them either. Also, although the forecasted price is low, how much will apps cost? And for that quality?

How about a live clock or world clock tile? I have to key WinKey/c to see the clock in Metro start screen, Metro IE, or any Metro app.

Then there's the desktop. Not exactly the same personalization as 7. i.e. I can't seem to find the Bing desktop personalization install as I like for 8. Not exactly a big thing, but that's what I desire.

I'm going to have to take a lQQk and see attitude here.

Thanks for starting the survey.

Yeah, the Mail app doesn't cut it for me anymore. I've been using it since I installed the Release Preview since I wanted to kick around the tires and it was much better then the CP's. But, it's glitchy. I'm trying to get Outlook 2010 to work but I have issues with that and I'm gladly going to wait for the Office 2013 beta. The news app is ok, I much prefer USA Today's app, it needs a touch of refinements but it's literally the best metro styled news app I've come across so far. And I would bet a LOT of the apps will be free, price tags will come later from now.

Thankfully there are developers building apps for Windows 8, so there might be that world clock!

Oh, the Bing Desktop was a Windows update for 7, but if you Bing Bing Desktop, I'm sure you can get that to install in 8.

it's a maybe from me, i absolutely love the core of win 8 it's so well done, the metro ui i can live with as well not a big fan of it but it's not the end of the world.

what will sell it for me is a device called leap motionLeap Motion, if that works as it should i won't need to fork out silly money for a touch screen and instead use that across all my screens that i already own.

if that works as advertised on release then i'll get windows 8 if not then i really don't see a reason to upgrade at this time.

No so sure about it, in BF3 as example, reaching the enemies with 1 bullet is not enough, you have to get a head shoot to be the first to kill the other one, or else you need more bullets and you risk more to be kill be the other one.

Even if it was free i would not upgrade,i find the metro layout really clumsy and pointless on a pc,you should have the option to disable it on a pc,but then if you do that you still have windows 7.
Impo i think microsoft have got it wrong combining the touch interface with a pc interface.
It will be inreresting to see what changes are made to the final release.

The frightening thing is the prospect of no genuine OS for desktop work if MS persist, and from the latest interview with Bill Gates, it seems like it's set in concrete.

On the positive side, Win7 should hold desktop users in good stead for several years. Long enough for another player to hopefully take up the slack left by MS. The plethora of new OSs in touchfones shows it can be done. So lets keep our fingers crossed, eh!

WTH is a "PC retail outlet"? Best Buy? Office Depot? You shouldn't listen to any of the idiots who work at places like that. Whoever you spoke to, I'd love to hear them explain the benefits to defragmenting SSDs. For extra hilarity, ask them how wear-leveling factors into their myth-busting theory. Here's a free clue: Stop defragmenting your SSD. There is no benefit, and the only potential effect is to decrease the lifespan of the SSD by increasing the number of writes.

Don't think Bill Gates is really interested in things now apart from being like a football supporter. When they score he cheers and when they don't......

Win7 will be fine for most for many a sunrise/sunset and leave Win8 to blaze along in the phone/tablet market. That's assuming of course that enough folks pick up on it and the jury is still out on that one so I guess it's a wait and see. Wouldn't be surprised though if MS get a bloody nose over this and they finish up releasing a son of Win8 with the Classic UI option.

IMO Win8 will either fly or flop, there will not be an in-between.

I'm quoting from the technicians who work in retail computer stores which exclusively assemble and sell OEM PCs, software, PC parts, and pretty much anything to do with computers.

In Perth West Australia, these include Arrow Computers, Austin Computers, PLE Computers, NetPlus Computers, and the list goes on. Every one of these stores have a free techical department for after sales support from qualified PC technicians, and also offer free technical advice to the general public. And you don't have to wait to have OS software mailed out to you. They're kept behind the counter so they can't be accessed by the public, and given to you on the spot when purchasing.

As one senior technician put it: "Your computer will wear out long before you wear out your SSD by defrags."

The reason for doing a defrag is same as before, which is to make data access faster ... and I do notice the difference after a defrag, albeit it's not huge.

What you choose to believe is up to you. But both my current SSDs, and my old reserve one, which have been defragged multiple times, are all going strong as ever.
So I will be continuing along my merry way of many, many more happy defrags! :dinesh:

And besides, at $145 a pop for a 120Gb Corsair Force SATA3 SSD, what's the big deal if it did wear out slightly faster? It's not a budget buster!
