why did ASUS partition this hard drive this way?

@whs is only expressing his opinion.

The data should always be in a separate partition, not on C. Then your data is safe when the system goes down.
Some find it more convenient, some (like me) don't. If you do want to have separate OS and data partitions on the same disk you have to guess the size of C:\ or you either waste space or run out. There is no advantage when your disk fails if you have partitioned your disk or not.

The advantage of 8.x is you can refresh without losing your documents so unless you like doing clean installs the whole thing is rather moot anyway.

Everybody can put their data where they want. But I have seen many people loose their data because it was on the C partition. That won't happen to a smart geek, but it will to the uninitiated user.

Been there, had to deal with it. Windows won't load, had to pull the drive to recover the files before doing a clean install. That's why all my systems have a separate DATA drive or partition. And any system I do a clean install on for somebody.

He's all set, I'm just scratching my head as this is the first time I have seen that on a New Windows 8 PC. I'm glad that they did that, don't get me wrong. I have seen more PC's with Windows on C: and Recovery on D: . not the way I saw on this one, Windows on C: and Data on D: No biggie, I guess you DO learn something new everyday. In fact I learned a few things here on my Post I started, which is Good! Especially NOT to make age references!!!! Which I still stand by my 1st Apology....
