Why are games usually about fighting / crime / anti social

Are we becoming that uncivilized?
No more than we ever were. The myth of the good old days is just that - a myth. If you think naked bodies in "Game of Thrones" and violence in GTA effects behavior then you only have to look at the TV show "Viking" to disprove it. They were more ruthless than the guy in Fargo.

I rest my case.

Are we becoming that uncivilized?

Were humans ever "civilized" ?

I think the majority are not.

In various mythologies the gods destroyed humans except for a few good ones.
I mention mythology because the human race has been mostly bad for thousands of years.

Take the Romans for example.
The Roman games seem like shooter videos in a way.

In my opinion shooter games & other games with lots of blood & guts appeal to mentally ill people.
I have seen some awful deaths in my time.
I'm an old Hippie too.
I never did like violence.

I do like Tomb Raider.

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=conan+tomb+raider+interview

Lara Croft is nice in my opinion.
You can run her into a wall full speed & she says "oomph".
I think her appeal is more sexual than her committing violent acts.
And it is a difficult game to complete.
Unless you use cheat codes. :)

I think also that the amount of time & money spent on "sports" in society contributes to a competitive Violent nature.
Most schools might have a football & baseball field but not enough money to have a good computer or science class.
This situation disgusts me. :(

Another historical note--- The playing fields of Eaton prepared the "Lost Generation" for WW1 & trench warfare.

Organized "sports" make me sick.
They are a breeding ground for competition rather than cooperation, in my opinion.

I would rather see young people in school working on computers or raising a vegetable garden than playing with various kinds of balls.

I'm through ranting now. :)

Peace & Love to all.:thumb:

Hi there

Thanks to all who replied in this thread --it wasn't my idea or intention to Ban or limit these games -- just to find out why so much brain power is spent on mayhem and destruction when we could be doing a lot of other exciting stuff too -- How many peiople playing GTA for example have ever flown in a Microlite or even been driven around an F1 racetrack in a genuine F1 car.

Another great idea is developing a whole new range of easy growing new healthy vegatables for big supermarket chains --the new Purple tomatoes for example prevent dementia, cancer and heart disease -- a simulation devising a strategy for developing these and bringing them to competing Supermarkets could also be fun too !! (and incredibly profitable if money takes your fancy).

I just hope that with the infinite potential of teh Human mind that we can find something a lot more creative than the current crop of Games --being creative doesn't have to be boring or unexciting.

Thanks anyway to all who replied on this thread -- andsas I said it's not my intention to stop people playing stuff they obnviously enjoy,

A decent sort of "War" if one can quantify such a subject is the current World Cup in Brazil -- -people follow their countries fortunes in a great compoetition -- maybe Political disputes could be solved this way too -- on the Soccer field. !!!!

Cheers
jimbo

Just a thought.

David, I think you may have gone to far for being against sports. They are very important part of human life. Bodily health depends a lot on physical condition. What I am a bit against is professional sport, paying some sports person heck of a lot more than scientists, is kind of waist but even professional sports have some positive sides too. Many kids look at them and wish they could bi like that. Maybe one in so many thousands get there but just a will to exercise can help a lot.
Competitiveness has it's own good sides, it is ingrained in all the live beings and had immeasurable influence to it's development and indeed it's own survival. Even plants have it, without it there would be no new life forms and none wold develop further than maybe their first form. Even wars are part of it.
Wars are everywhere and play their own role in development and staying power of any specie. Sitting peacefully, early in the morning in my garden I can see dozens of wars all around me. Tomatoes against weeds, ants against earthworms, lady bugs against red mites, red ants against brown ones, hundreds of small wars going on there.(nice seemingly peaceful garden 5 AM). It's basis of all survival. Sad to say, it looks like humans are the only ones that take it to degree that is detrimental to it's own specie but think of all the scientific and technical advances that were made in the time of crisis called war (which can be just an extreme result of competitiveness.
It's not a black and white world we live in, heck, it's not even shades of gray, it's very colorful without any hard defined borders, every good thing can have bad side to it but bad things (very relative thing) can have their "silver lining".
It is up to individuals to define their own boundaries and to strive to live and keep within them.

I've played a few violent games, FPS mostly. The Medal of Honor series. Wolfenstein, I just bought Wolfenstein The New Order yesterday and played it last night. Also played Doom, etc. I like the action part of it. I don't think of it as killing people as I realize its only a game. I also play some racing Sims like WRC. I have a Logitech MOMO Force feedback racing wheel with the gas and brake pedals. It also requires quick reflexes. My latest endeavor is flight Sims. I have a Saitek Flight Yoke with throttle quadrant and rudder pedals. It's quit relaxing and still exciting. I play all types but I think the younger crowd prefer the fast paced action type or game. Unfortunately that usually involves shooting something or destroying something.

I really like FPS games but I don't own a gun and have absolutely no interest in hunting or killing anything in real life. I'm just not that type of person. Playing those types of games has not changed that, Not for me anyway.

This brings back memories! Good times playing Doom, good times.

That reminds me, I got a free coupon for the DOOM Beta with my Wolfenstein The New Order Game. Time to go have a look I think.

EDIT: When the DOOM beta is about to begin, you will receive further instructions at this email address with next steps on how to access the beta. :(

Guess I'm a big old wuss because I like adventure games which are pretty tame usually. The Longest Journey and Syberia are two of my favorites. Hard to find ones of such quality nowadays though.

Myst was a bit weird for me also. I like interaction with other characters and also when you travel to different locations. The slide show interface didn't do much for me either.

I really liked Myst, never did finish Riven though. I think I played all of them in that franchise at one point or another. I'll admit to Googling one or two of the puzzles though. Now there are some nice non violent games. The other nice thing about those games is you can take all the time in the world to play them and move at your own pace. An FPS without the S.

Maybe.

Can the same be said for crosswords, sudoku, chess, bowls and lots of other stuff? Or is it just violent games that have this effect? Maybe it is any number of things that involve a bit of brain activity.

The Positive and Negative Effects of Video Games

Shooting games actually decrease dementia, so old people should play a lot of games like that.
Games represent the real life, since people are violent by nature, it is the gender, they like the most.
Todays life is all about fast thinking, you have a split of second to reply, to act, it is the definition of IQ.

I have played games for 20 years and I have played only 1 anti-social game GTA, it seems like people use it as an example all the time, even though it is just one game of tens of thousands. I would prefer to play strategies like Age of Empires or adventures or simulations, but they take too much time, people do not have.
