Which office for Windows 8?

Has anyone looked at open office on Windows 8. Works well on 7.

OpenOffice, and it's (IMHO better) spin, LibreOffice are great applications. For many people, they are wonderful replacements for Microsoft Office. However, there can be formatting issues between the two (open source and MS) products. Depending on your usage, one may be better than the other. If you just need basic word processing, I'd suggest forgoing both MS Office and the OOS alternatives, using Wordpad instead.

I use libre office with my Ubuntu partition and open office on my Windows 7.

Formatting issues have not been a problem for me, but I use it only for word processing and simple presentations. I also have office starter but have never really liked the "ribbon" concept. I do use it on occasion to convert from .docx to .doc

Microsoft in my view took a very good program and mediocratized it. (sorry for my neologism, but you get the idea)

Neither OpenOffice nor LibreOffice support OpenType 'advance typogropghy features' such as ligatures, stylistics sets and true small caps. They only support Graphite font features, but Graphite fonts are few and far between, whereas OpenType fonts with such features are widely available.

Likewise, ditto and same here. The old pull-down menus are far clearer, and don't take up so much space.

I would agree with Coke Robot that going with the web apps route is a good idea. Personally, I like to install as little as possible on my computers. The fact that you can run an office app without installing anything is certainly appealing to me.

I often do work where there isn't a decent Internet connection so office apps from the web only are a bit of a no-no for me.

Office 2010 you can obtain really cheaply legally via a Student / Home edition or for almost nothing by a "Work at Home" type of solution.

For me Office 2013 is in the same state that W8 is -- it doesn't yet know if it's a mobile phone app or a desktop app.

Using Excel with Touch is a NIGHTMARE - End Of.

Powerpoint when purely in display mode is OK for presentations and displaying the next set of slides - but for CREATING a presentation -- Touch -- just forget it.

Word -- same comments -- Touch in READ mode - but write / create -- again forget it.

Also office 2013 doesn't have customisable background so the white only ribbon etc is very poor in bright light.

I'm sticking to Office 2010 for the moment.

I use LibraOffice... works fine on Win8. I don't share files or need to at the moment so it's a nice tool for me. I just wish I could by Word as a standalone application. I miss being able to do that.

I have yet to see anything like a sensible replacement for EXCEL - others do the job partially but not good enough for my needs.

As for email clients I also still haven't seen anything better than OUTLOOK (YMMV on this one of course) -- the old Outlook express provided in XP was also a great Email client but anything else I've used really has all sorts of problems with multiple accounts, different international servers etc etc.

(The only other email application I've ever used in a corporate environment was Lotus Notes - and believe you me that's just about the most "User Aggressive" or "User Unfriendly" system I've ever had the misfortune to work with. However I think even IBM (who initially bought out Lotus are giving up the ghost and using Office instead.)

Now Outlook can be integrated with GMAIL it's even better IMO too.

If it hadn't been for Office I might have switched to Linux years ago.

I used to use OpenOffice/Libre Office at home. However, with the advancements made with Google Docs and the Office Web Apps product, I don't even bother with the installation of OpenOffice/Libre Office anymore at home. The online web equivalents handle all of my basic tasks with no trouble.
