What we know so far about the upcoming Windows 8.1 Update 2 and Windows 9

Windows 8.1 Update 2 (or Windows 8.2 as some people are calling it) and Windows 9 are the two big upcoming updates to the Windows operating system. We've heard rumors, we've all read reports, and we've all seen the leaked information. So when are these two updates set to arrive? Let's recap what we know so far.

LOL Hippsie, especially this...

I call this a "I have nothing better to do today so I'll write an article of pure speculation with a video to impress them all" syndrome. :D

Classic :roflmao:

I'm glad it amused you, Drew. When I read the article, my mind went into a sarcastic mode. :p

You must have posted yours just before I did. Agree with you there. :thumb:

Well I was feeling a bit tipsy when I read that so it hit the spot :D

And thanks.

OK so this morning I decided to splash out for the media center pack for my original Windows 8 code I purchased for $15 as an upgrade in Dec 2012. Purchasing took a fully patched and up to date system to not being able to activate with some wierd error message about non genuine software that I did not have on my system. So I called M$ and spoke to a helpful rep and he sorted out my issue with the phone activation application. I asked him about Windows 9 and he said it was about a year away but they were being trained on update 2 for August or September time frame which will be served up by the store apparently and it is another 3Gb download. That is what I was told, now whether to believe them I don't know but what the heck would they be doing with a 3Gb download to update the OS?

I'm looking for increased IE performance mainly, and a refresh in the Bing apps, ideally a new and better Xbox Music app but I've come to face the fact that such a thing won't be happening anytime soon.

Oh, and maybe better app switching behaviors. It sure gets tedious at time.

I'll wait for Windows 9 to be floored with new features however.

They really need to add some of Windows Media Player's feature's to Xbox Music. Things like the equalizer and the other enhancements. They need to do this for Windows 8.1 & Windows Phone 8.1.
I'll bet a big part of the Update 2 is Cortana. It's already on Windows Phone 8.1.

EVERYTHING Zune is should be Xbox Music. It's utter poop still in comparison with everything else.

I doubt Cortana is Update 2, I figured Update 1 was adding Cortana since the release coincided with such. It's more likely Windows 9 than 8.1.2. Cortana is still in beta and will be for quite some time, I think until early 2015?

Well, i disagree, it is not a very good os, it has many, many things, that are bad compared to windows 7, not just start screen. It feels like you are no longer in control of any action, there is so many automated things that you cant turn off, its ridiculous... It feels like ms wanted you to feel too safe, so they put YOU in a prison instead of bad things...

I will have to agree to disagree with you. Have they took away some controls? In a manner of speaking, but these controls can still be accessed if you know where to look. Which brings up my next point. Not everyone is like us who knows what we are doing. We have to remember that the general population will not have as much computer wiz knowledge as we do so any company such as MS would need to be leaned more towards their safety and needs compared to the smaller party.

Myself, from the video I just saw it seems like they have took some great advice and suggestions from the MS communities as a whole and are trying to develop it how it should be.

Well, nuclear weapon is a dangerous thing too, so not everyone can have one :) Maybe they should do the same with windows ? Or maybe they should get their sh1t together with versioning - home version is for simple home users with no knowledge, and professional version is for actual pros ?
One thing for sure - ms is screwed (not in a really bad way, but in a "minus respect for such noobie actions") - they have money, they have power, they have much people to do things, but it seems they have noobs chiefs and managers, or they have bots programers. The company exists for such a long time, but they still cant do their freakin job, what a pathetic example for the world.
One rhetorical question - microsoft is worth so much, but these scapegraces are just playing with us like a little children are playing with food... So, what is takes to make such money from such bad decisions ?

Well, M$ is a typical large corporation, unwieldy and of slow response time, led by salesmen not enthusiasts. Driven by market share and stock worth. Long time ago they stopped being OS developer only. I would not be surprised if Windows is actually just a small part of their revenue.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 ....

If I remember correctly Windows 8.1 Update 1 was released before BUILD 2014. I know it was, not through Windows Update, but Microsoft leaked the files the Wednesday, the week before BUILd 2014. Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview was released at BUILD. I know about Windows 8.1 Update 1 because I downloaded it on both my pc's within 2 hour's they were leaked. After 3 hour's Microsoft yanked 1 or 2 of the file's needed.
Cortana could become a Windows 9 feature, instead of 8.1 Update 2, but they really can't afford to lose any more people to Apple, Google or Linux. Especially, now that Steam's OS is Linux. Then add the rumour, that the Start Menu isn't coming back, until 9 arrives. That one, if it is true, could kill off Microsoft
They really need to add some of Windows Media Player's feature's to Xbox Music. Things like the equalizer and the other enhancements. They need to do this for Windows 8.1 & Windows Phone 8.1.

Steam on linux is just a big bubble, like it was on mac, it means nothing, if devs arent making games for linux or mac.

Ummm, but a lot of game manufacturer's are starting to program for Linux and Steam itself is porting many games. Steam is the largest provider of PC games, and their controller is supposed to be out next year, which is linux driven. Though it's release was pushed back.

Mac is becoming almost as universal for gaming as Windows for games. So, it will be hard to tell.
