I have an older Intel board sitting around that I would like to use, but the reason I replaced it was it had a bug that I never could figure out. Every time I would unplug the computer to either work on it, or clean it out, the CPU fan would run at 100% speed and I had to unplug the computer a number of times to get it back to normal.

Those guys just waste time...

Well... the first thing I'd do too: replace the missing part with the first good heatsink I find (some positive thinking: you might even replace the original with a better one).

Between us, I replaced some heatsinks for north bridge chips a few times, no perfect matches, I needed to replicate/replace the older binding mechanism with some copper wire I found in house. (see here under an example at left: the thin metal binder that holds the heatsink into place was missing) In the end all was tight and well made.
The copper replacement was better than expected and even outlasted other factory components.

I was in a hurry then, so I don't know anybody else that went that low to fix some heatsink problem.

Art, I believe someone with your expertise in the matter has some spare parts around or can get a good replacement. I'm confident this will work out pretty well. :thumb:

Definitely a bug with the bios, but none of the updates ever resolved it and now, since the board is older, there haven't been any new bios updates since about 2008.

I'm scrounging for a 775 socket heatsink/fan and some more DDR2 RAM. This may be a good way to build a PC for our son's friend and he'll learn quite a bit during the process.

I have a minor glitch in BIOS no one's been able to explain, but a few claim to have. Every now and then when it wakes from sleep, either in my 8 or 7 side, the CPU fan roars for about 5 seconds then simmers down. No big thing, but strange. Even stranger is that it does it for a few days then not at all for awhile. It's like she has her "time of month".

And to top it all, it never did it with Vista, which came on the machine.

I could handle the problem you have, but my CPU cooler fan won't simmer down unless I keep pulling the plug on it until it does. I guess Intel figured that most computer users never unplug their machines and so decided it wasn't worth fixing.

Sorry to read of yours. That's a shame.

I'll sleep mine during the day when not using, but shut her down for the night. I also have a switched power surge strip that I switch off because of my printer and sound system power supplies and a phone charger. I'm frugal that way.

I did replace that motherboard with an Asus board and haven't had any problems since. But you are right, it is a shame to have a board that otherwise works OK sitting in a box in a closet.

Did you ever try booting into safe mode 1st after having it unplugged? See if it would work normally, then boot back into windows after. Just a thought. A Guy

You could send the board to me and I could try to fix it. No charge, just pay shipping... I hooked up the EVGA motherboard with a spare Q6600 CPU and 1 GB of DDR2 RAM, but it gives an "FF" error code,. so I need to figure out what that means. The owner's manual says it is "Boot", whatever that is... I just want to get into the BIOS...

I got one of those machines that does this all the time and is considered normal (HP BIOS).
What I also find weird in your case it's that it does that sometimes and didn't do it at all in Vista.
