Hello Guys! I had to post in this forum because I am stuck into dead end and I cannot find way to solve my problem.
PC is Toshiba Satellite P 850 with Windows 8 64 bit pre installed.
I then updated to Windows 8.1 through store only to find out it rendered my PCs backup capabilities USELESS
Here we go:
I own a Toshiba Satellite laptop model: P850
OS: Windows 8 x64 pre installed/factory installed.
First thing I did when I started using my laptop was getting familiar with the OS, and of course creating a secondary partition for my stuff (files and so on)
I used a free 3rd party software called:
Mini tool partition wizard which proved to be very good.
The best Windows 8 partition manager ? MiniTool Partition Wizard.
( no advertising intended , its a free program and very useful)
Before doing any of the operations I did a deep research of how windows 8 partitions and recovery work so that I don't accidentally render them useless.
*First thing I did was Creating 3 DVD disks using "Toshiba Recovery Media Creator"
Then using the above mentioned software (partition wizard) I created a second partition by taking space from the C partition.
While creating a second partition (called D) I DID NOT move, resize, format or merge any of the factory recovery and system partitions.
Then I continued using the Computer for things I usually do. I updated some of the drivers, installed windows updates and computer was working good.
Then Microsoft released windows 8.1 officially so I decided to give it a try. I read the Manual about installing "Windows 8.1 Update" from the Toshiba driver download page. Installed windows 8 updates, then went to store downloaded windows 8.1 and waited for the installation to complete.
Then I continued updating my drivers as it was said in the manual.
While working with my disk partitions and before installing windows 8.1 I made screenshots both from windows disk manager and from Partition wizard
After installing Windows 8.1 I immediately noticed that the installation created a second recovery partition (also known as Windows RE) with the size of 350 MB
I of course took screenshots again both from windows disk manager and mini tool partition wizard.
I will upload the screenshots as soon as I can so please stay tuned.
Meanwhile, I tried creating a System Restore (Recovery) image
From Control Panel>>>File History>>>/bottom left/>>>Click System image backup on the bottom left
I connect my External HDD which has 450 GB of free space
Then I see and choose:
EFI System partition: Total size 260 MB Used space 52.63 MB
Partition (C) (System) Total Size 250 GB Used space 59 GB
Windows Recovery Environment system Total Size 350 MB Used space 350 MB
Space required to save backup of selected drives: 60 GB
Space available on External HDD: 450 GB
And when I start the process I get error:
The backup Failed
"There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on storage location. Make sure that for all volumes to be backup up, the minimum disk space required for shadow copy creation is available. This applies to both the backup storage destination and volumes included in the backup. Minimum requirement for Volumes less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabytes of free space. For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended at least 1 gigabytes free of disk space on each volumes if volumes size is more than 1 gigabytes (0x80780119)"
So it looks like after the Windows 8.1 update the OS installation created this new "Recovery partition/drive" with the size of 350 MB, left the old one untouched, and the new one is too small by default and is already full (350 MB used from 350 MB available.
It needs 50 MB free in order to work properly (and in order to be able to create recovery image.
So I am baffled by how my Toshiba laptop got destroyed by Microsoft's windows 8.1 update.
I am wondering if there is an official fix,
and what do I do with the OLD RECOVERY PARTITION that is left behind?
Is there a way to make factory reset and Return to windows 8 and return the *HDD factory state*? Exactly the way it was when I opened the box?
As I mentioned in the first place, when I started using the laptop I created 3 recovery DVDs using Toshiba utility.
