I hear you, elbmek. I will say this, though. While it's still a nightmare, refreshing put a light at the end of the tunnel. Before it, I was losing more & more functionality each day, as things broke & could not be updated. Since I did the refresh, another update broke it. BUT I learned an invaluable lesson from Brummyfan - look into the update before you do it. If you find no reports of issues, you can install it. Depending on the type of update, you can roll it back & hide it if it does create problems. This worked for me today. True, a major hassle. True, I think it's pretty disgraceful that MS has put into production so many unreliable things. But they did. So, if you stick with Win8, this is prob the way it'll be for a while. May as well clean up best as you can with "refresh" if nothing is helping. :)

thanks but surely MS should bench test all updates before putting them out. MS are well know for rushing things. Look at Win ME for example!

You can try installing them offline.

You need to do that with Dism from another o/s - winpe is fine.

I put mine in by booting into win7 and running the dism commands from there.

The Dec 11 update that came to my machine would not update so after some 15 attempts over 4 or 5 days, I did a repair and all updates started over and all installed. It was a pain to have to reinstall my applications, but OS working all right now.
MS let me down by not addressing the fouled up consolidated update of Dec 11. The MS tech gave me several corrective measures to take, but none worked. The system repair did, but it is almost like starting over again.
