Three weeks in: The lackluster launch of Windows 8

Microsoft’s Windows 8 and Windows RT — and dozens of new touch-enabled devices, such as MS’s own Surface tablet — have now been on the market for three weeks. Whether you’re a critic of the new Start screen, a Windows zealot, or just an interested bystander, you’re all probably wondering the same thing: Has the Windows 8 launch been a success or not?

Some government organisations in The Netherlands, like the one I work at, are still running Windows XP, Office 2003 and IE6. Talk about taking security seriously! I don't think they have any plans to upgrade to either Windows 7 or 8 and don't see the need to upgrade to the latest IE browser.
Well, unless they're willing to shell out through their noses for extended and custom support for those products after April of 2014, the first major security outbreak that affects XP, Office, or more likely IE6 because it went unpatched due to one of those major products hitting the support EOL date will bring them to their senses. And if that doesn't, nothing will, and trying to talk sense to the senseless is always a losing battle.

Ok let say your bucket as 2 gallons ( 8 liters or 8000 ml )

you need 20 drop for make 1 ml

so the ration is 1 drop for every 160 000 ml

so 1/160 000 we are far from your 1/10

as you said you want to keep the number simple, so I don't use PPM...

You want reality, all the kids of my customers use phones and tablets to facebook and text and they don't have PCs anymore in their bedrooms, before they all have their own PC, Microsoft is not performing well in the Phone and Tablets. ....... this is the reality...no need to accuse me of been pro Apple, I just relate the facts

if you want to rant and get testy, that's your call. me, i deal with reality. 1 in 10 is not a huge marketshare. again, you're trying to will it into existence. and using your anecdotal evidence doesn't make it's any more true. It's great to rah rah for your apple enthusiasm. doesn't mean everyone has a Mac even if all your friends have Macs. even if you "see Macs everywhere".

people see what they want to see. it's called confirmation bias.

I have both Mac and dell. I love os x for its stability, on my dell I had windows xp and windows vista both of which I was not crazy about, but needed a windows laptop for my work... I am a stormchaser actually chase tornados not try to rip off people with bogus storm damage repairs, and the only really good weather radar programs only run on windows. now that I updated to windows 8 I have to say that windows 8 is as stable as mac os x .... never thought I would say that but I have only used it since November 6th. if it continues to work as good as it does now I will be quite impressed with windows 8 pro.

i deal with reality. 1 in 10 is not a huge marketshare.

Apple share of the market increase of 29% in 2011 and Windows share of the market decrease of 3 % in 2011 ...

and it's not 10% anymore in US

Mac Market Share Around the World: USA 15%, Canada 14%, Australia 14%, and more

Mac Market Share Around the World: USA 15%, Canada 14%, Australia 14%, and more

Go ask HP and Dell what they think of the little 15% of the Market Apple have in US , they will not say that it's not a huge part of the market.

food for you tough

Apple may make more profit selling one Mac than HP does from 7 PCs

Apple may make more profit selling one Mac than HP does from 7 PCs

you guys have to look at things in real terms. no matter how big apple and google talks up the sales of devices like tablets, they're still a drop in the bucket compared to PC sales. yes, tablets are shooting up while PC sales are stagnant.
but while selling 3 tablets instead of 1 is better growth than 15 PCs instead of 14 PCs, it's still 15 to 3..

15 to 3 , LOL , the drop become very big

Apple now largest computer maker, sold more iPads alone than HP sold PCs

Apple has surpassed HP in both computer unit sales and revenues for the first time, taking the top spot sooner than expected on record sales of iPads. Rather than losing sales to low priced tablets, Apple said it would "continue to innovate like crazy" in the tablet arena.

Apple reported record quarterly sales of 15.4 million iPads and 5.2 million Macs, giving the company over 20 million sales of dedicated personal computing devices (distinct from its sales of more than 37 million phones). Gartner reported HP's worldwide sales for the fourth quarter to be 14.7 million, while Lenovo and Dell sold 12.9 and 11.6 million units, respectively.

man, area, your apple love is pretty insane. it's admirable that you're such a strong fanboy.

look, I own a LOT of hardware across all different platforms. why? because they all have benefits. and because I can.

I know more about most OS's more than most people. If you can't find good things about every OS, you're very narrow-minded and too dedicated to your platform. I own an iPad 2, an Android tablet with ICS, HP TouchPad, Kindle Fire, Tablet PC, a pair of normal laptops, and 3 desktops. they all have their respective benefits and I love all of them to varying degrees.

Here's my squadron of tablets (wanted to show off my Bruin bear since UCLA did beat $UC this past weekend :D):

you really need to step back and calm down. I don't know where or how those stats were counted. And I doubt you do. Without knowing how their metrics are made, there's not much validity in it. besides, up 29% doesn't mean anything without knowing the absolute numbers. And using web usage as the metric for marketshare is very misleading. Especially when one web metric says IE has majority share and another metric shows Chrome. If you go from 1 to 3, that's a 200% increase. Yay! 200%. Nice to know that you picked a Mac site to get those stats as well.

It doesn't make much sense that you're at a Windows forum for people to get advice when they have a Windows problem. If you want to stop ranting and have a real discussion, I welcome it. Otherwise, no point to dealing with your lack of objectivity. I'm not going to tolerate your BS any longer. I've read plenty of your posts. If you want to keep acting like a petulant child go ahead, I'm not going to participate. I will call you out when you're go way way overboard on the lying though.

This isn't a messageboard for Apple fanboys to argue the merits of their platform. You have plenty of places for fan wars. If you want real Windows help, this is the place to go. Otherwise, you're just being a troll.

Well since Microsoft release Windows 8 to compete Apple and Google on the Phones and Tablets market, I think it's not bad to see what make Microsoft panic , because all these love and hate around Windows 8 start with the fact that Microsoft loose sales in favor of Apple and Google ( Android ) and Microsoft force peoples to use a phone interface in their desktop

Your focus is absolutely pointless, as far as this forum is concerned. All it does is fan the usual Microsoft/Apple flame wars.

BTW, Microsoft does not force anyone to use a phone style interface with Windows 8. You can install any number of applications that returns the typical desktop interface where you never have to see or use the 'Modern' interface. Have you completely missed this?

What Apple/PC war are you talking about ?, I just use the example of Apple, because he said that tablet is just a drop in the market share. This is not true as Apple sell more tablet that HP sell PC. I'm even been called Apple Fanboy. I wonder who are the real fanboy if we can't use Apple tablets sales as example without start a war.

I build PC computers for living, I loose money when peoples purchase an Apple, I loose money when someone purchase a tablet. But still I can talk with objectivity about the fact that Apple is getting a huge part of the market.

I'm talking about the typical Microsoft/Apple war regarding which is better; it's as pointless as trying to debate which beer is better. While Apple dominates the tablet sector, it's desktop market is minor in comparison to Microsoft in the worldwide market and Android (notably Samsung) dominates the mobile phone space.

Microsoft is expanding its market from just its historic cash cows, Windows, Office and gaming software, into a broader marketplace. It's going to take some time, so comparing Windows 8 etc at this point in time is moot. Everyone bagged Microsoft when it introduce the X-Box, yet it's pretty much the biggest gaming platform in the market. Microsoft has always been in it for the long haul and should not be under-estimated.

The Zune never made it outside the US for some reason; so who knows what may have been, had it been available worldwide. There are many things that are only available in the US, so quoting domestic only products isn't that compelling an argument.
