I'm pretty well convinced that most people that have problems with Updates either had botched Upgrades or were using a third party anti-virus or anti-malware program that interfered.

One common problem is that many people don't disable their anti-virus when doing the upgrade, and some anti-virus products have been found to corrupt the upgrade process, creating an unstable upgrade.. it may seem to work, but slowly one problem after another starts to happen.

I have done just that, installed windows 8 as upgrade, then used WMC key to install WMC
then later on I have done clean install of windows 8, used same key WMC to install again

by selecting (add feature) no problems at all…

Me too. You can reuse that same Media Center Key on the same PC you originally used it on over and over again. You just have to do the add features after installing 8 pro each time. There currently isn't any 8 Pro plus Media Center install media, so you have to do it in two steps.

I updated to Win 8 pro.

Since my existing Windows 8 was OEM, the clerk at Staples said I needed, "Windows 8 Pro Pack".
Your present Windows HAS to be "Activated".
The instructions come with the card holder.
There is a plastic card with a scratch off number."like a lottery ticket"
there are 6 steps on the getting started instructions.

I spent 3 hours on the phone with Microsoft because my Windows wasn't activated.
He did a remote proceedure call which took forever

But, he was GOOD.He knew what he was doing & they did it FREE !!!:)

He fixed my problems with Microsoft Updates while he was at it.:shock:

I have everything on flash drives these days. Install media, Windows updates, Drivers, most used programs. The only time I use a CD or DVD is for game installs that use the disk for DRM.

I always choose the "clean install" versus the "upgrade" because I've seen too many issues with the upgrade. I don't dual-boot either, as I was having lots of issues with Win8 when I did that and after the clean install, I haven't had a single problem. Your mileage may vary...

Thanks for that advice, folks. I'm afraid I pre-empted you somewhat, however.
As I said earlier, the plan was always to do a clean installation, but time etc precluded it at present. Well, plans got changed and the time became available. So, although the upgrade install was running well, I formatted and did a fresh install last night. Activated and upgraded to WMC without a problem, and all updates again installed easily (and golly! Wasn't there a lot of them?).
Drivers are installed, and all hardware is working normally. Most of my apps and programs are also installed and working. The only thing left to do is to re-install my games and do something to make the start screen look nicer. Whether as an upgrade or as a clean install, Windows 8 is probably one of the most hassle-free ever to get installed and running. I'm impressed.

Thanks also for the advice re product keys.

Don't know if you knew it already Wenda, but the program "Decor8" is a very nice tool. You can use this to customize your Start. I.e. let it show the same background as your desktop, which is pretty cool! And that for a lousy USD 5.

Another nice program is "Oblytile". With this program you can customize the tiles, as well as adding Logoff/ Restart/ Shutdown tiles!!
