One more thing. The original issue I experience was also a slow boot issue where miy rig would get stuck on the BIOS splash screen for a good 20 -30 seconds on a cold boot but this was an intermittent condition and also just started after upgrading to 8.1. So, not having any issues with Avast 2014 running on 8.0, it took me quite a while to eventually isolate the issue to be an Avast 2014 problem. However, I am happy to say that my slow boot issue has been completely corrected since using Defender as an alternative.

OK aVast removed and all problems gone.

Thanks for the tip.

Fantastic news! You were able to take the troubleshooting process one step further than I. You might want to update your "me too" post to reflect that as well (if you haven't done so already. Good work!

Hi Hairy Scot, May be on the wrong track but when updating to 8.1 my Avast stopped working and was removed and replaced with Windows Defender by Windows themselves. I downloaded the new Avast version 2014.9.0.2006 and now all well.
Your Home Page can be reset in FF25 by entering Options/General and reset Home Page.
Hope this of some use to you.

Yorky.

You sure it was Defender that did it, the Sirefef virus takes over Windows Defender and uses Windows Defender to remove all AV programs. It will also prevent you from downloading any AV, you can try to save the file to your computer but it will just vanish. In order to deal with it, you have to change the name of the windows defender folder, then run the Eset Sirefef Removal tool, it's the only tool that effectively gets it all out, it will take maybe 2 reboots if it is really festered in there.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Hi XweAponX.
Sure all is well, no virus and the new version of Avast was downloaded and installed without any problem. I can't recall the exact message now but when Windows activated Defender they advised me to contact them (Avast) to obtain new version (or words to that effect).
All aspects of my computer fine, rapid boot-up (fastest ever with 8.1) and all functioning as normal. I trust Avast having used it for a few years. From memory I recall that almost each time I installed a new OS - like Vista and then W7 and then W8 the Anti Virus needed changing to comply with the code of the new OS.

Partially fixed

I have just installed the latest build of aVast, 2014.9.0.2007.
The boot-up time lag has been fixed but the Power Management Issue remains.
