Just over the last couple of weeks I've had a very strange rather icon-like vertical rectangle appear on my desktop in every session, generally within a very few minutes of completion of loading of startup programs, and I haven't been able to relate its appearance to any specific program. It looks like a manifestation of a malfunctioning program, but I really haven't a clue which. Commonly its appearance does coincide with my loading a program or opening a window of an already running program - but there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which program or window-opening coincides with its appearance. Once it's appeared - always in the bottom right-hand corner of the desktop - it doesn't go away, nor change in any way.
I can drag the rectangle to anywhere on the desktop, but not drop it into anything; it simply drops in the new position on the desktop - and dragging works only if I click on its right half, above its bottom rather paler strip. Unlike desktop icons, it cannot be selected or deleted, and clicking on it (single, double, right, middle, left) doesn't do anything - no menus, no action.
The attached images show it in its corner and also moved away from the corner, so you can see that it wasn't extending beyond the screen edge.
Any ideas what this is, and how to get rid of it? -- Many thanks.
