I would be VERY careful with things downloaded from that site

The free Photofiltre link is legit.

I didn't say it wasn't free or legal to use, I said I would be careful about downloading it from a site that seems to disregard copyright law, it could have viruses or Trojans in it. That's why I suggested downloading it directly from the author, rather than skeevy download sites that promote piracy.

I use GIMP (free) and works on Win8 as well:

You can make anything, also icons.

Gimp is way too complex for most people, and has a terrible interface. And that's saying something, since Photoshop's interface is terrible as well.

A much better choice for most people is Paint.net

It's got all the features most people need, a much simpler and better interface, and free.

I've been using Paint.NET for some time, very easy to use and like you said most features are there.

But what if we know something more about imaging and want a solution for many things (all-in-one)?

If you'll need something that does all-in-one stuff: ico format, dds format, textures + normalmaps and bumpmaps ALONGSIDE simple re-sizing, then GIMP will be the best choice. By the way: get the version 2.8 where you can simplify the interface (one window). And has already got x64 version available (just like PS) but unlike the most general x32 programs you have out there.

SO for me GIMP is heavy duty and has no replacement (PS has diffident functionality, GIMP is more creative) because I use it for too many different things that a simpler program couldn't handle: in case of a simpler program you'll need 10 different programs for 10 different things but no thanks.

The simpler option you gave fits best in this thread.
BUT leave my option for people who do wanna try a more advanced program.

I've used Paint Shop Pro 8 for years, it's pretty good, not too hard to use, and works well on Windows 8. It was originally a legal 'freebie' on a magazine cover-disc, fully-working, but no tech support.

Perhaps you should read my link again. Right at the top, it has links to all 3 versions. 6, 7, and 10.

sorry for all the fuzz and back and forth. Mixed up your link with an opened link to photofiltre free homepage, which offers v6. Late nights, thanks for your patience.

Am posting about Photofiltre only to get people to try it out among the other offerings, as it got some very userfriendly and specialized features when it comes to working on photos (it's much more of a photo program than a paint program). Have been using it for like 10 years for quick and easy photo fixing. Just want to share some positive experiences with a not so well known tool.

Adobe is offering Photoshop CS2 free to everyone who creates an Adobe account (which is free). Overkill yes, but worth it.

Photoshop CS2 is still worth it -- great learning tool -- if you can get this for Free go for it. Unless you are a professional photographer the upgrades since CS2 aren't really worth while the hassle and even if you use a DSLR most of the RAW formats will still work with Photoshop CS2 (and even if they don't you can use the Camera's own software to convert a RAW file into something Photoshop CS2 will understand).

This has to be an UNBELIVABLE offer -- when CS2 came out it cost (from new) over 500 USD !!!

Current version is CS6 but apart from a few filters, 64 bit operation and 3-D CS2 is MORE than sufficient for 99.9999% of the casual shooters out there.

It's a strange situation, it's now available for download from 100's of sites, incl. Adobe, but is not free to use, but in practice it is.
Quote from Adobe: ...we have made available a version of these software titles that does not require activation..." and they provide a working serial number. They must have expected that it would trigger a mass download, maybe they want to use it for marketing the latest versions, who knows.

Um, I upgraded form windows 7 with the upgrade assistant. No complaints about Picasa compatibility. I haven't used it much, but I haven't had any issues at all...

Thanks to all who responded for all the advice. I wasn't aware that there were that many choices out there. I ended up using Microsoft Photo Gallery and it's working for me.

If you need any tips of Photo Gallery, let me know. Being a former big Picasa user, it took getting used to the Photo Gallery user interface.

I'd just like to add my thanks for the posts about PhotoFiltre 7- I've just downloaded and installed it and it fills the gaps that Paint.NET otherwise does a great job of filling my photo editing needs .
