Post your Boot Time!

I always wonder about comparisons of boot times. At what point is each you posting a boot time starting your timer? For example, do you start it at first notice of the Windows OS startup sequence. Or, do you start it a first notice of any screen activity whatsoever. And, at what point is each of you stopping your timer? When the login screen comes up? When you get to the point where you somehow know you have a useable screen? Or, when, all apparent startup activities end? Or, from an overall perspective, are you using event viewer to time the process?

Looks to me like the measurement process would have to be standardized to get any meaningful comparisons. Ater all, we are talking about mere seconds and potentially even more mere fractions of seconds.

Boot times are cool and all, but they don't paint a true picture of a computers performance. My desktop gets through a POST in about 2 seconds, my desktop takes 15 seconds to POST My desktop will absolutely crush my laptop in raw computing power.

I time bootups with a stopwatch and note

• Time from push of power button to screen even turning on
• Time from screen turn on until end of POST
• Time to Start windows until logon screen appears
• Time from logon screen to desktop with icons and apps are responsive.

Right, it must have something to do with the OS. I run several systems on the same desktop and times vary. Win7 IE is slower than Win8 IE and both are slower than Zorin FF.

So, in principle, what time period are we talking about? If done "by hand," wouldn't it be the period between first visual of the OS boot process and the point where the opening of some program would not be slowed by the boot process--which potentially woud be something of a guess. In this regard, one ideally would choose a very easy log on or set his machine to log on to a particular user automatically. Not sure if slowish log on would affect boot time though.

So obviouly I get a bad result for reboots. But what does it matter. One usually boots only once per day - unless there are updates or unusual events.

That is one reason why I keep my other systems (Windows 8 and Zorin) in VMware. I can go there without rebooting.

Try restart while a USB device plugged in on some systems.

15 seconds cold start, 10 seconds from hibernate. I set it to hibernate when the lid is closed. I never fully shut it down.

Coldboot From UPS-all-on to Windows desktop -- "Battleship" post, boot & startup -- ranges from 3 - 5 minutes average.
[bcdedit set to allow 420 seconds max before F8/regular menu kicks in; that allows all ext devices to come up to full green before W7 boots]
Warmboot, restart -- "Battleship" boot & startup -- ranges from 2-3 minutes.
I assume the original question means seeing desktop, and actually having a desktop ready to go.
When taskbar notifications area shows all regular 27-30 monitoring, security, utility-is-ready icons, then I know desktop is truly ready.
In another place, I was tongue-in-cheek calling the above: Blue Water Navy Aircraft Carrier [or Battleship] Task Force post/boot/startup. While the Widows & Linux Navy Seals out there must have fast accurate well-armed speed boats,
planes out at sea have to land somewhere

The best reference for boot time is Event 100 in the event viewer. That's the one which counts. This is how it look for my Windows 8.1 - note though that this is booting in a virtual VMware partition.

You have to drill down this chain:

Eventvwr
Applications and Service Logs
Microsoft
Windows
Diagnostics - performance
Operational
Event ID 100

Then double click on an Event 100.
