old games are very slow

Maybe try VMPlayer, which is available for free.

I got this way Netgammon to work, even that it is really old and wouldn't even install in compatibility-mode without errors.

Well done for finding that! I've only tried it with Rayman 3 & Midtown Madness 2 so far but it does work. Before applying the fix the game was fluctuating between 40-20 FPS. With the fix applied using the ACT the games at a constant 72FPS during gameplay and the lag has gone away.

Midtown Madness 2 still runs at 27FPS but it may just be capped, I'm not sure as I haven't got an older version of Windows running to test it at the moment.

You might give it a try without the VM Tools installed: that way some of the extra acceleration won't be enabled.

You can even partially install the tools (deselecting components during install). In some cases the SVGA graphics gets way accelerated and some of the older games run better with 3D acceleration disabled in the VM.

Update, that fix did work for some games however even though the FPS was higher it was still rather choppy. I got fed up with keep messing around with this and VMware isn't a solution because some of the games are old but not old enough to run acceptably in VMware. I'm back on Vista now for the foreseeable future until there's a proper fix (Don't like Windows 7, long story).

I can now play both old and new games on my machine again which means I can actually have more fun using my computer. It's such a shame that after nearly 3 years of use I've had to resort to this, even more so because I'm a system administrator and have successfully rolled out Windows 8 to around 200+ machines so far and would liked to have used Windows 8 at home as well but it just seems stupid to be running an OS on my PC which doesn't do half of what I would like it to. There have been rumours of 8.1 Update 2 being released soon, so I'll be interested to know if they fix this issue but I doubt they will since it doesn't seem even be a priority for them.

Yeah. I have similar feelings. Although booting is far quicker and they decreased the stupid winsxs bloat with 8.1. (I got like 8+ gigs space freed up after installed it)

I think avada is asking if Windows 10 has the same problems with older games than Windows 8/8.1.

I'd be interested to know that too, although I doubt we'll see any change...If anyone with the Windows 10 preview can test some of the old games which worked under 7 but got funky under 8, that would be nice.

It's a shame than most of them work better under Linux with Wine than under Windows 8...

Yes I was. Not even sure what he was thinking of. :)

It really is a shame... MS needs to hire like one guy to pay attention to it, and maybe rewrite some stuff to run on CPU or a never DX version. It's pathetic that they won't.

But since it's in the context of this forum. And apparently win10 being the next update after 8.1...
Anyway hopefully someone from this thread is experimental enough to try it.

I am trying out Windows 10 and sadly the same issue from windows 8 remains. It is really early so we still have that hope. There is a feedback section where we can tell MS some feedback and i reported the issue. Really weird issue. I think it has to do with metro and worrying about multiple devices because in window mode the framerate will change. Who knows,i just hope they fix that issue.

Thanks for the information.

Just to let you know it's nothing to do with Metro. Somewhere along the line between Windows 7 & 8 they screwed up DirectDraw emulation which is what is causing the issue.

DirectDraw has been emulated since Windows Vista and except for the odd issue here and there worked fine for the most part. Something changed to this emulation in Windows 8 which causes games that use DirectDraw run very slow. For some reason though they work fine in Windowed mode which sort of proves that the issue could probably be fixed very easily however even though we're trying to make Microsoft aware, they don't seem to be doing anything about it. It's possible that they may fix it so it's useful that feedback is left regarding this issue.
