Ok I see what I did with the 100MB partition and that the install is going to be purely 8 and none of my settings.

I'll try it and see what happens it is just I have to reinstall CC MBAM Live etc etc

What I still don't get is why Microsoft would sell the upgrade for the $53 where the non upgrade versions are

You get a price break with the upgrade copy since you are agreeing to no longer use your current qualifying Windows that you are upgrading from while using Windows 8. Think of it as a customer loyalty price.

The "system builder" copy is more expensive since it does not require a qualify OS. Think of this as like the full retail version of Windows 7.

So that I have this really clear in my mind (what's left of it now) a) I slide in a new drive with nothing on it and install from the 8 Pro upgrade disk - or b) do a straight 7 OS install - no frills and install the upgrade on top of it.

Sorry to be so thick but I must be sure that I am doing the right thing as things around here have gone a bit haywire the last few days .


Now I suppose b) then negates me from using the 7 disk anymore as well ?

You're getting close John.

Think of it like this.

You qualify to purchase and install (clean or upgrade) the upgrade copy of Windows 8 if you already own a qualifying Windows (ex: Windows 7) that you agree to not have activated while the Windows 8 is activated.

If you do not own a qualifying Windows (ex: Windows 7) for the upgrade copy of Windows 8, then you would need to buy a "system builder" copy of Windows 8 to clean install with instead since you do not have a qualifying Windows (ex: Windows 7) to retire while the Windows 8 is activated.

Hmm I did what I said I would but all I got was the 8 logo.


So I don't know what to do maybe I will just have to try again tomorrow as I am away from home at the moment.

I don't understand because the 8 installed over the 7 clone (that is the 7 was on it already) on this laptop without a hitch.

Ok I will ahead and do the clone and then put the 8 over the top like I did with the laptop. I think the clean install has something to do with the product key in point 2 being that I have the 8 key so that the install is 8 and 8 alone.

But first I will try the start up from the upgrade disk although I don't think the upgrade disk is going to do anything except give me that logo again and if it goes further I shall put in the key for the upgrade in and see what happens because I don't have a key for the 8 full version and even the key for the 7 and see what happens.

The latest I did what was suggested and put an empty formatted drive in inserted the upgrade 8 Pro disk ran the boot from optical and waited and waited the pic is what I get

The Gigabyte GA_H67UD3H-B3, & Asus P8Z77-V are UEFI.

Are you booting the MOBO & DVD in UEFI mode, or booting both in Legacy mode?

Theog it isn't the EUFI BIOS so I suppose it is the legacy type like the pic.??

The board is a Gigabyte GA-H67MA-D2H-B3 if my memory is correct. To be honest I don't mind installing over the 7 as it keeps my settings if I do the 8 on it's own means I have to go through all that stuff again and it is going to take up nearly as much space I would assume.
