You can also check if display driver has EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) which provides driver with monitor abilities (Monitor has to support it too) as that can also limit or extend settings.

Mus be in the GPU control panel somewhere, didn't see that in windows settings.

Another question, are you using both your laptop screen showing and also your external monitor? It's possible that the laptop display doesn't go over a certain resolution and is prohibiting the external monitor from going higher as they are for the same resolution.

What type of display adapter are you using? ( hdmi etc )

Neither can change anything, they are just for information about HW.

Well, the thing is, the monitor is 1600x900, but the cable is a VGA. SO I'm guessing it's a VGA adapter?

Yes, I am using both my laptop and my monitor screen, I'm thinking of extending the screen to my laptop. The highest resoluton it can go to is 1280x1024

One of my monitors works on 1680 x 1050, the other one is at 1440 x 900 and both are VGA with DVI to VGA adapters. So it's not because of VGA.

I just looked it up cause I wasn't sure... the maximum resolution for a vga is apparently

2048x1536px @85 Hz (388 MHz), and rarely 2560x1920 @63 Hz.

So that answers that part I guess hmm

Do a test for me though. Tell it to only show your external monitor and you may need to reboot while doing this. (make sure the monitor is set for both digital and analog signal just in case ) and then see what the maximum resolution is. Like I said I think what the issue here is the combination of the two can't correspond or have different resolutions.

Is it safe to assume you are having the graphic driver to auto size to fit the entire screen as well?

It might be a laptop issue, I never had problems setting different resolutions on separate monitors with desktops. Some laptops have two GPUs though, integral and discrete.
