I installed a new HP all in one for a client about a month ago and when it boots up it goes to the desktop. A friend just installed a new Dell Inspiron 3000 and it too boots up to the desktop.
Must be something the PC vendors are doing??

A new install of 8.1 update boots to desktop automatically (the original 8.1 didn't). Unfortunately this is the best source I could find but it certainly fits my experience of clean installs on my non-touch laptop...
So no, not OEM, it is MS changing how the initial log on works. You can of course change it if you want.
Now, with Windows 8.1.1 new computers that don’t have a touch screen should automatically boot into the familiar desktop screen

I don't know. There are probably lots of people who still use Windows 8. I miss the old start screen but there we are - gotta keep with the program...

Thanks for the info. Then the 8.1.1 works like Windows 10 is supposedly going to work.
