Thanks 4wd.. ok, design change by MS. Um, shame. I found that hand icon -er- a handy reminder. The split screen and mix of desktop and modern GUI is pretty slick.
I think I'm close to identifying one cause of the safe mode crash. I'm guessing it's a driver in a supposedly Win 8 compatible converter program. I'm down to a group of 5 programs, 3 are small and unlikely candidates. I've had this sort of experience in Win 7 with an Easeus driver for ToDo Workstation, which they then updated, acknowledging it- even provided me drivers from the next version to use. Safe Mode isn't so exclusive, alas.
Dodgeman21- I guess you'll have seen MS seems to be being inundated with Win 8.1 Update 1 failing to install.
