MS agrees KB2919355 fails on 32bit Win 8.1 on 64bit laptop

Thanks 4wd.. ok, design change by MS. Um, shame. I found that hand icon -er- a handy reminder. The split screen and mix of desktop and modern GUI is pretty slick.

I think I'm close to identifying one cause of the safe mode crash. I'm guessing it's a driver in a supposedly Win 8 compatible converter program. I'm down to a group of 5 programs, 3 are small and unlikely candidates. I've had this sort of experience in Win 7 with an Easeus driver for ToDo Workstation, which they then updated, acknowledging it- even provided me drivers from the next version to use. Safe Mode isn't so exclusive, alas.

Dodgeman21- I guess you'll have seen MS seems to be being inundated with Win 8.1 Update 1 failing to install.

Hi, I've now solved the Safe Mode restart problem - for now- as there may originally have been more than one cause when I first found this problem and had many more programs installed. Having almost started again, and progressing in smaller batches, the first culprit is Tipard PDF to Word converter (which claims Win 8 compatibility). As I install further programs, there may be more which have this effect.

It fails for me too. I originally installed Win 8 Pro 64bit then upgraded to 8.1.
It's a custom built PC and I had to resort to restoring to restore point 4 times.
I also tried installing the updates manually in the correct order. I already had the 422 update and after only the 355 it reaches 30% then goes black.

My specs are;
OS: Windows 8.1 pro 64bit
Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Formula
CPU: i7 4770K
Storage: 250GB + 500GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD's with the OS installed on the 250GB SSD.

I did a fresh install and it updated fine this time.
