Moving to windows 8

Get a dozen of them, you can lay them all out next to each other. No multimonitor problems :roflmao:

I am very much a desktop person too. But as a toy, I think a 7" tablet would be fun. Right now I am not sold on Android (the OS that is being held together with rubber bands and scotch tape) and Apple products I do not buy out of principle. QNX would be an alternative, but RiM have their own problems.

Give the 7"s a good try before buying, I find them far to small.
Certainly John. I already tried a few 7" Android devices and they looked OK as far as size is concerned. I am just not convinced about Android.

I do not plan a tablet for any serious work. Just as a bigger smartphone because with the 4" screens I really have problems with my eyesight. And for playing around with it on those 11 hour flights between here and the US.

Hi there
I think you'll find that if you do a lot of serious spreadsheeting (with macros etc), power point demos or even creating decently formatted word documents a Touch screen is more of a hindrance than a help.

Tablets are something that work for some but not for me -- I need at least a 10 inch screen to be of any use whether travelling or not.

However that said I DO like W8 and don't have problems adapting to the metro interface -- It's early days but what I would like is to be able to customize them and arrange in groups -- Apart from the Stock Exchange app I haven't used any of the "Canned" apps included in the basic Metro interface.

However I'm impressed by the stability and performance of the release --especially as it's still PRE BETA software.

Cheers
jimbo

I'm still holding off trying it for awhile yet, if and when I do decide I'll either dual boot again like I did with Vista/Windows 7 or see if I can work out how to use a Virtual Machine to intall it on. I'm another of the desktop type it's very unlikely I'll be getting a laptop or a Tablet for a number of years yet, I'm still only just working out using a touch screen with my phone.

Joan, at this point, you are not really missing anything. The Metro is the main new thing and that is pretty useless for a desktop. There are a few other news like the new task manager - but nothing to get really excited about.

I ran the whole Win7 Beta in Virtual Box. That went very well and may be a valid option for Win8. However, if you have 2 HDDs, you can also make a seperate installation on the second HDD and switch via the BIOS. Then you get no bootmgr confusions.

I understand that this will even work with an external disk attached via eSata. I will try that in a couple of weeks when I am back in FL where I have a system with eSata and a corresponding external enclosure.
